Default HOSTS File Has Been Updated

It never works for me, I dropped it in the etc (using XP) folder ages ago,
and fiddled and tweaked for AGES, scoured the web, tweaked the lmhosts
setting, imported to lmhosts and so on.... in my DUN settings and so on
....spent hours and hours on it. Bloody waste of time. That's not to say it
isn't a good thing but, it just will not work on my machine, and several
others with W98se in'em as well, by the way.

The very first time I used it, is seemed to be working because the banner
ad. at the top of my ISP's home page, (injected from doubleclick.net), and
where the banner should have been was a "content blocked" message, but, next
visit to the home page after that the banner ad. was back. Tried completely
blocking cookies, constantly exiting IE6 to delete cookies and tif and so
on. Set "empty tif on IE6 exit" to speed things up while whistling around
and so on.

I just pasted www.netpond.com (a web address in the hosts file) and it
couldn't have been directed to 127.0.0.1 localhost because the site just
page loaded in my IE6 browser window !

I've had the same thing on three W98 machines using dial up internet
connections. I thought it might be to do with proxy settings, particularly
the "Bypass proxy for local connections," which is ticked when a DUN is
created online with my ISP ...anyway I tried all that in the past and gave
up.

Now if someone could point me at a comprehensive list of settings, or site
with similar..., XP services that must be on, W98 environment settings /
essentials for the hosts file to work and so on, that would be marvellous.

regards, Richard
