Default Win Me Notebook cannot detect an 'always on' Internet connection

Hello.

I have borrowed a notebook computer from my education
institute. It comes with a dial-up account but I'd like to
use my persisting broadband connection of my desktop
computer (with Win 98 SE and Win XP Pro installed).

The broadband connection is 'always on'. (It automatically
connects to the Internet when I log on to Windows. I don't
know how to say this in computerese :| ) When I
subscribled to the service, all I need to do was the plug
the network cable to the LAN card and both Windows in my
desktop detects the connection automatically and no
configurations were required.

However, when I unplug the cable from my desktop and plug
it to the notebook, Win ME doesn't detect the connection
automatically like the Windows in my desktop does. How can
I fix this?

Any help are greatly appreciated.

PS: I'm suspecting the LAN card in my notebook isn't
functionly properly? How can I carry out a diagnosis on
it? Thanks again.
