Is your antivirus program running when you're attempting the update?
If so, temporarily disable it prior to the installation.
Where are you attempting the update from ? (i.e. CD, Windows Update,
Microsoft Download Center, Internet Explorer Downloads, etc. )

'Save' download file "ie6setup.exe" to hard drive from v4. windows update site.

Close all open programs in the lower right SYStray that you can,
including VIRUS checkers.
Open the little file to start the installation while connected to the
internet.
Close any window that you opened to find the downloaded file.
Finish, and allow reboot.
Keep the time when virus programs are disabled to a minimum.

There is an option to remove old versions using the Control
PanelADD\Remove programs if you right click the MS IE program shown on
the list.
