Windows Update IE 6 Service Pack 1 Installation-failed
I have been trying to install the Critial Windows update
IE6 Service Pack 1 for Me since April The DL is 452KB, the installation takes ages and when it gets to the 91% installation it fails. The error message I recieve "The Short cut "Resume Windows Update Installation Ink" refers to a location that is unavailable. The location could be on a hard drive on this computer or a network or on a different computer on your home network......... I have shutdown my Firewall which didn't help, I receive error messages that I have an Installation that is not complete, "Do I wish to install", Another error message says "Installation could not be completed, you need to restart your computer to finish the installation process. I am on DSL, High speed. Can anyone help me get this update installed? thanks |

The initial download (452KB) is only a stub which allows you to choose
options for the full download - which can be up to 75MB. - does this at least start? When booting the PC, do you get any error messages? Windows Update IE 6 Service Pack 1 Installation-failed
Yes, I do get error messages: When I reboot the message is what I mentioned in my initial query. These are the messages I get when I try to install IE6 Service Pack 1 Resume Windows Update:Internet Explorer and Internet Tools Setup has detected that a previous installation was not complete. Do you want to resume and continue with set up? *yes- Resume Set up *no- Resume set up from the begining. Select this one if setup has failed more than once.(I used this one last time) Initial Set up -Windows Update IE and Internet Tools *Install now--Typical (I use this one) *Install selective Prepare Setup Installing....................91% STOPS installing Windows Up date: INternet Explorer and Internet Tools Setup was unable to install all the components. Please close all applications and try running setup again. OK Help Under HELP..It appears you have the correct setup byt the installation failed. Try closing down all the other programs and try running setup again. If it dosen't wokr contast Microsoft Suppoert for additional help. Seems to me I had trouble instaling the origianl IE6 and when I went back in my notes I found 221863 Error Message from Microsoft I followed the instruction after the part "IF using MS_DOS modes doesn't work", AND IT WORKED LAST TIME, but this time I can not find wininit.ini on the Local Hard Drives. Searched for wininit.nin which was the change in name but nothing on the search. I have FREEDOM Antivirus and Firewall from my Internet provider. I shut both down when I am doing the installation. Hope this gives you enought to go on. I tried to DL Q331923 OE Patch, to stop OE saving to My Documents, but it said there was an Instalation that was not complete and could not do this until that one was installed. So I am going around in a circle. Windows Update IE 6 Service Pack 1 Installation-failed
The 'Resume......lnk not found' error is simply because you're not connected
to the net at the time - it's a URL shortcut. This looks like a variant of the Norton System Doctor problem - see if the following applies (NSD isn't the ONLY cause - simply the most common one fy far!) You may have up to 32,000 empty OEM*.INF files sitting in your c:\Windows\INF folder, which prevents any program putting a legitimate *.INF file in there (it also slow your system down to stop, trying to read them and sort the [non-existent] contents!). You need to DELETE all 0byte (and ONLY the 0byte) OEM*.INF files. look here for information on how to do that , and how to prevent it happening again (i.e. TURN OFF NORTON SYSTEM DOCTOR - unless you are actively troubleshooting something) The Symantec site: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...15010309&src=n also "Computer Stops Responding (Hangs) During Setup, Installing Updates, or Adding New Hardware" (http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q281967) also http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q301540 (which contains the fix for your problem in the NOTE under the patch description) Phone your Local MS office, and tell them your problem quoting Q301540 - they'll either send you the patch, or give you a one-use password, for the cost of the call. Windows Update IE 6 Service Pack 1 Installation-failed
I had seen a similar posting to this one earlier today and
I deleted all my oem*.inf files even if they were more than 0 bytes. Could this be to blame for my inability to print (the initial problem I was trying to solve) and perhaps the cause of IE6s guaranteed failure whenever I go to the Windows Update page. Can I get those useful oem*.inf files back? Thanks. -----Original Message----- The 'Resume......lnk not found' error is simply because you're not connected to the net at the time - it's a URL shortcut. Windows Update IE 6 Service Pack 1 Installation-failed
It could very well be your problem - or at least a contributing factor.
Unfortunately, there's no easy way to tell what's gone, as there are no OEM*.INF files in Win ME except for OEMCPL.INF These files are generally created by installing hardware drivers - you should first reinstall the drivers for you Video card and your sound card - and any external devices you have (including printers, etc) from the disks/downloads Then reboot to Safe Mode, and check out Device Manager there - see what's reported as giving problems, or is duplicated, and post back.
