Default cant open explorer or any folders and cant install anything on my comp

My computer has Windows XP on it. It currecntly wont allow me to open
any folders or install anything on it. I dont have a recovery disk
since my work installed the sw on it and i do not work there any more
to have them re-install.

Is there anything i can do? I've searched these forums and most posts
say to install items. Since i can not do so, I'm looking for an
alternative. I've tried booting from a cd and that doesnt seem to do
anything.

Any input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Not sure the exact cause, however, this might be part of or the issue.

XP, under corporate multiple licensed environment, does have the ability to
be monitored for that licensing. As you are no longer in that corporate
licensed environment, the licensing may have expired and shut down access.
VISTA also has this ability enhanced.

What exactly pops-up when logging on or when attempting usage?

you can try a "repair" install to see if it helps ...this is not 'supposed'
to lose any info from your HD

boot to the XP CD and start to install XP at a certain point in the process
it will see the existing install and give you an option to repair it.

hth

ps. what MEB is talking about is usually indicated by an error like "unable
to perform task because of an account resritiction" or similar....if there
is no error screen , a repair is indicated

Your best bet is to post to an XP newsgroup where you will get advice from
people that support that system. This is a W98 newsgroup in case you missed
it.

The error message says: Explorer has performed an illegal operation
and will shut down

I dont think it has to do with not working there anymore. As it has
worked for a few years up until now and I havent worked at my previous
job for more than 4.
