IIRC (but can't confirm ATM), IERadicator removes the update entries for IE
at the same time as IE itself - we'll find out when you run Belarc later

Also, I need to know if there is a way to reset Windows Update so that it
will offer me all possible updates.

There is no such thing as a good third-party memory manager for Windows ME -
period!
Any software claiming to be such is taking large liberties with the facts.

The resource meter is overkill - although useful at times - since it does
itself use resources. Just work on until you get a warning popup that you're
getting short, and then shut a few things down.

You don't have to sit and watch the virus-scan - do it overnight!

WRT .NET, the fact that it's 'not verified' means nothing one way or the
other - it's up to you whether you uninstall it or not (it may be a good
idea, though I doubt it'll be affected, and you can always reinstall it
later if need be)

What is wrong with GoodMEM and RAMIdle that they should "never have been
in
there"? What "major trouble"? They were never active at the same time as
each other, but I used RAMIdle at the same time as the Windows Resource
Meter.

I have the Windows Resource Meter start up with Windows. It lets me know
when I run low on resources. It is a good guide to see if there are enough
resources to open a particular application at any given time. It helps me
know when it's time to reboot. I wish it also showed me system memory like
RAMIdle does. I will not reinstall either GoodMEM or RAMIdle if they will
hurt my operating system, but the Windows Resource Meter is a feature
important to me. If there is a better memory manager and system resource
manager, please tell me what it is. Thanks.

A full system antivirus scan will take more than 4 hours. I just ran a
full
scan 01-14-05. Do I really need to run another one?

If NET Framework is not verified, why leave it installed? Why not
uninstall
it completely and reinstall it?

Thank you for letting me know I can run IEradicator in Safe Mode.

Your 'completely Uninstall' list should not need to be any longer than
LiveReg
GoodMEM (which should NEVER have been there in the first place - and is
likely to create more problems than even Norton!)
LiveUpdate 2.5
Norton System Works
RAMIdle (again - should never have been there - and if it's active at the
same time as GoodMEM, then you really have been asking for major trouble)

To Noel Paton and the others following this thread:

I have not been on the computer the last few days due to illness. It may be
a while before I feel up to doing serious work on the computer. IEradicator
is serious work. Let me tackle that when this has passed and I am feeling
better.

Thank you all for your support and understanding.

This is my first day back on the computer, and there are a couple hundred
emails to sort through. Once the important ones are backed up, I will be
running IEradicator as planned. Sorry for being away so long, but I am
sickly and frequently ill, have to live with it. Thanks.

It took some time, but all emails have been backed up.

Since it has been a while, I am also going to run full-system scans again
with eTrust antivirus (my new antivirus now that Norton has been
uninstalled), a2 antitrojan, Ad-Aware, and Spybot. This will take probably
the rest of the night.

When that is done, I will disable my security programs, uninstall Outlook
Express, back up the registry, and run IEradicator.

STATUS UPDATE
--------------------
No viruses or spyware on full system scans.
Antivirus, firewall, and other security software were disabled
Registry was backed up
Outlook Express 6 was uninstalled.
IEradicator was run (no error messages)
IE6SP1 was reinstalled
IE/OE both work
System Restore was fixed according to Noel's instructions
System Information works
Help & Support works
The computer runs much faster now

Updates that were reinstalled:
290700
329115

Updates suggested by Windows Update:
CRITICAL
889293 Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 SP1 (KB889293)
837009 Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 SP1 (KB837009)
RECOMMENDED
887797 Cumulative Update for Outlook Express 6 SP1 for Windows Me
(KB887797)
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1
Euro Conversion Tool

Updates that were reinstalled:
889293
887797

Updates that failed to install:
837009

Updates that were reinstalled:
Jet40SP8
MDAC 2.8

Updates not yet reinstalled:
Net Framework 1.1 and its service pack

Internet Explorer HELP-ABOUT shows ;SP1;889293;887797. Previously, it only
showed ;SP1;889293. That is some improvement. However, Belarc Advisor still
shows no green check marks next to SP1, 887797, or 889293. That concerns
me. Also, 837009 still will not install. It says "This update requires
Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 to be installed." This is the problem I
had before. That is the error message that originally started this thread.
Antivirus, firewall, and other security software is still disabled, but I'd
prefer not to leave it that way for too long. I wonder if it would be
different if I had reinstalled Jet40SP8 and MDAC 2.8 before trying to
install any IE/OE updates.

What should I do next?
