Windows ME unstable
Hello All
I wonder if any has an opinion about my problems? I am getting frequent kernell32.dll error messages, such as "Explorer has caused an invalid page fault in kernell32.dll at 018f:bff614ac. Explorer will now close" Similar messages are encountered using other programmes as well, particularly spider solitaire (my wife is addicted, not me of course) I have read that such things may be caused by corrupted swap file and that it should be deleted or renamed and Windows will recreate it. However this adice was in regard to Windows98, and as ME has no native DOS mode I can't do this! I have also read in this forum that similar errors have been attributed to Norton AV 2004 and I recall that I have recently installed Norton 2004 after having been infected with CWS. Could Norton be my problem? I installed it because it was recommended by PC Plus magazine as the best antivirus suite! I reularly run Adaware 6, Spybot and do virus scans, so I don't think I have any viruses. Sorry for this long post but I thought some backgroud would be useful. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. |

Mike, I am also having problems with NAV (NIS) 2004. Would I be better off
getting another product? I would like an antivirus, firewall combo and even an anti spam program too. Can/would you make a recommendation for an ME os? Thanks, Bonnie "Mike M" wrote in message ... Norton causes countless problems with any operating system and especially so when the user is running Win Me and those problems are doubled or trebled when it is NAV2004. As for NAV2004 being the best AV suite, the only thing that is best about it is that it is the best at wrecking systems - just see the mess that Norton is now in following the release of XP SP2. You mention possible problems with your swap file. If you want to remove this as a possibility boot to DOS using a floppy and delete win386.swp from the DOS prompt. By default this will be in your C:\Windows folder but could be in the root of C: or any other drive if you have chosen to relocate it. -- Mike Maltby Glynnw wrote: Hello All I wonder if any has an opinion about my problems? Bonnie.
Products you may wish to consider include EZArmor from Computer Associates (www.my-etrust.com/products/) [I use EZAntivirus but not the firewall which is a rebadged version of Zone Alarm] and Zone Alarm Security Suite from Zone Labs (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp). I use Zone Alarm Pro for my firewall although this is not really necessary as I am behind a router using NAT. I see that Zone Labs have a US$30 instant rebate for those using Symantec. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Bonnie wrote: Mike, I am also having problems with NAV (NIS) 2004.
