System freezes

Running Windows Me on a Compaq Presario 5000. The system
will freeze often and will require improper shutdown. At
times when the sytem freezes nothing will happen at all
when using the Ctrl + Alt + Delete. To Shut down you have
to either turn of the power or hold the start button in
on the unit.
Also when trying to veiw pages on the internet I get this
page can not be displayed a lot.(when trying to down load
critical updates or other pages)
I have run nortons WinDoctor on it, and cleansweep.
I have tried to download the critical updates(there are
21 at present)But I can not get them to download. What
can I do to stop these freezes?

what programs are running in msconfig at statup, you may try stopping all programs from running, then downloading updates , then start each program one at a time to determine which one might be causing this problem.

I dont have access to the computer right now. So I can
not get a list of programs in msconfig. But are there any
programs that needs to be running for the computer to
function properly?

you really do not need anything checked to boot the computer in my experience. but if you have system restore enabled it will not function "statemgr". As a general rule I leave systray and explorer checked, but not required.
