Default USB mass storage device

I am using Windows 98 and successfully installed Nusb31e for my computer to
detect my USB mass storage device. It detects it and displays it under the
“Unplug or Eject Hardware” application, but it did not assign it a drive so I
am unable to actually open the device. Does anyone have any suggestions for
how to have the computer actually do more then detect it?

Thank you

We need more details e.g. which function or
Windows app makes you think Win98 detects
this device but does not assign a drive letter?
(My Computer = EXPLORER.EXE.) There are
several possible causes. What drive letters
are free? Drive letters can be restricted by
AUTOEXEC.BAT, by TweakUI settings etc.

I know it is detected since I can see it in the Unplug or Eject Hardware app.
The drives that are free are E: to Z:.

Maybe the drive is hidden? You can check this using TweakUI.

Do you have a Lastdrive=n statement in config.sys ???

Exactly what do you see via the Safely Remove Hardware tray icon?

When you single-click the tray icon, you should see a pop-up box like a tool-tip,
stating "Safely remove USB mass storage device - Drive (x)" or words to that effect,
where (x) is the drive letter that was assigned to the device. If it does not
appear there, it should appear when you double-click the tray icon, and expand the
list of hardware devices that appears (This is from memory as I am not on a 98
system at the moment).

What do you see via single- and double-click on the icon?

TweakUI is a utility supplied with Microsoft's PowerToys.

It may be on your Win98 CD, otherwise you can get it he

Drive letters can be hidden from view by unchecking them in TweakUI's
My Computer window.

You can see the contents of your config.sys file by going to Start -
Run and typing "sysedit".

- Seen as device(s) in the Eject-App.
- No (Win98xE-readable) volumes to assign drive-letters for.

Maybe the drive isn't formatted?
Or formatted with something Win98xE can't read? (NTFS)?

Is there a "USB Flash disk" in Control Panel - System - Device
Manager - Disk Drives?

If so, what do you see under Properties - Settings?
