Thank you. I get to a black screen and on top it says starting windows 98,
and underneath there is a small blinking line. Solomon "Gary S. Terhune" wrote in message ... How far did it get? What does the last screen look like? -- Gary S. So, Solkeys, you've been around here for a while... Do you need instructions on
using SCANREG /restore? -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP Shell/User "Solkeys" wrote in message ... Thank you. Scanreg /restore is usually the *first* thing to try when you suddenly can't
boot up. Safe Mode is the next thing to try. If the restore fails (especially one from a couple of days ago), then one suspects hardware or other basic drivers. Only if/when Safe Mode fails does it get sticky. -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP Shell/User "Solkeys" wrote in message ... No,but what this have to do with my problem? Solomon "Gary S. "Solkeys" wrote in message ... In the morning when starting my computer Windows won't finish booting up, Why? Solomon If you mean that a second reboot works, then that could mean a weak or failing PSU. It takes more power to start disks spinning from a standstill. Once the disks are spinning, as during a reboot, it doesn't take much to get them to proper speed. |

Ahh, yes. I was seeing this as a new problem--that the machine wasn't booting at
all, not that it was only the first boot of the day, every day. But it might be almost anything in the hardware profile, not just sad PSU. If a device isn't ready when polled by BIOS or Windows, it's gonna mess thing up. And that doesn't necessarily point only to the PSU. *Anything* that is usually warmed up and ready to go by POST time but takes longer when starting from cold could be at fault. -- Gary S. Yes by the second try it starts, now what does PSU mean?

In this case, PSU = Power Supply Unit. It's the transformer that converts your
input elect. power to the various voltages required by the components. One thing you can do is enable the Startup Menu (MSCONFIG, Advanced button at lower right.) When the Startup Menu appears, let the default 30-second timer run down until it automatically boots to Normal Mode. Unfortunately, there's no decent, cheap way to test if it's the PSU without replacing it. It's not expensive, but while it is the likely problem, it's only *likely* to be. Otherwise, the t-shooting starts with stripping the system to bare essentials (mobo, video and HD) and then slowly adding components back in. Not fun when you consider the fact that you only get one test run every hour or so, letting the hardware cool back down between tests. -- Gary S.
