Unable to remove Microsoft Windows Critical Update Notification 4.0
In Add/Remove programs, I receive the following error message when trying
to remove Microsoft Windows Update Notification 4.0: "Could not locate INF file wucrtupd.inf." The Update Notification program no longer appears in the Task Scheduler in System Tray, and I cannot find the missing .inf file. Windows Update does not give me the option to reinstall as it shows I successfully installed the program in March 2004. So I can neither add nor remove the program from my computer. In MSCONFIG utility under Startup tab, I have the check box enabled for SchedulingAgent (mstask.exe), but TaskMonitor (C:\Windows\Taskmon.exe) is no longer listed there. Windows 98SE. Johnny_B |

Unfortunately, the Windows Critical Update Notification utility employs the Task Scheduler by default as it runs every five (5) minutes. I do NOT want to use the the Microsoft Windows Critical Update Notification tool. I do, however, wish to maintain the integrity of the Add/Remove Programs, so my objective is to REMOVE that program entry from Add/Remove Programs. Also note that the file 'wucrtupd.exe' is no longer on my computer. I believe at one time it was located in the "C:Windows\System" folder by default. Bottom line here is I have NEITHER of the two components files installed anymore. Johnny_B |

Unable to remove Microsoft Windows Critical Update Notification 4.0
Go back to Windows Update and look in the "Update
Catalog". You may have to adjust your personal settings at the site to include Catalog under "See Also". Then do a search you will find the Update Notification there. And it will be downloadable. -----Original Message----- In Add/Remove programs, I receive the following error message when trying to remove Microsoft Windows Update Notification 4.0: "Could not locate INF file wucrtupd.inf." Unable to remove Microsoft Windows Critical Update Notification 4.0
Yes, I found the Update Notification in the Catalog and downloaded it to
"C:\Windows\System". However, it was not automatically installed on my computer as usual. Instead, I now have a file named "cun.cab" which contains two (2) files. I don't know how to proceed from here. Please advise. Johnny_B "ppoatt" wrote in message ... | Go back to Windows Update and look in the "Update | Catalog". Unable to remove Microsoft Windows Critical Update Notification 4.0
Problem completely resolved!!! Let me expound on this. I extracted the
file "cun.cab" to temp folder C:\Windows\Temp. Yup, that cab file contained file "wucrtupd.exe" and file "WUCRTINF.inf. Note: Some *.INF (setup information) files are "advanced inf files" that cannot be opened by right-clicking on the file and choosing Install. Most of the *.inf files downloaded from Windows Update are "advanced inf files." To open an "advanced inf file" requires the following command from an MS-DOS window -- "RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection inf file(required),inf section(optional)" (no parenthesis). So I simply ran "RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection WUCRTUPD.inf" (no parenthesis). JACKPOT!!! Windows Critical Update Notification successfully installed! Then successfully REMOVED from Add/Remove Programs. Where's PCP at when I need him???? Johnny_B Extract the contents of Cun.cab to the C:\Windows\Temp folder and then copy and paste this text into the Run Box. rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\WUCRTUPD.INF, DefaultInstall It is all one line with spacing and exact capitalization of utmost importance. There are three spaces in the line. Use WinZip or similar to extract the contents if you didn't know how to do that before this. A standard right click and Install choice done on the inf file will NOT work in this special case. You should then be able to uninstall it completely from Add/Remove Programs and then set Task Scheduler as desired. |
