EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault
I just replaced my hard drive and re-installed WIN98 and WIN98SE. I had
complete system backups and restored them, including the Windows Registry. I did not restore the Hardware or System settings in the Registry since I had a new hard drive. Before I replaced this drive I was running IE6 SP2. Now when I try to open Internet Explorer I get the message shown below. (The addresses are not always the same when I try to open it and sometimes the module changes. Most of the time it is unknown. I saw SHELL32.DLL once. I tried re-installing WIN98SE but nothing changed. I can open Outlook Express but I can't send or receive. The version for Outlook Express is 6.00.2800.1123. I can't open Internet Explorer so I can't look at the version. Internet Explorer and Outlook Express did not show up in my ADD/REMOVE window so I tried re-installing Internet 6 and Internet Tools from a CD that I had from another application. Now Internet 6 and Internet Tools are in my ADD/REMOVE window but Outlook Express is not. But nothing changed. I still get the "EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault." This computer is networked with 2 other computers and that seems to be working ok except for the internet access from this computer. Any suggestions on how to fix this? Thanks, Marc EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module unknown at 0000:000000c0. I do not understand why you followed the procedure you did....replacing the hard
drive does not require reinstalling Windows, and restoring your backups. Nor is it necessary to first install Win98 and then Win98SE, which is what you posted. Also, exactly how did you restore your backup "including the Registry" but "did not restore the Hardware or System settings in the Registry"? When you install a new hard drive, all you need to do is use the software that usually comes with the drive to copy the old drive onto the new drive. If you still have the old drive with the system and data still intact on it, I suggest you reinstall it and use the drive software to copy the old drive to the new drive. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "marcew" wrote in message ... Hi Glen, not sure how Marc did the registry either, but from an earlier
thread the original HD was dead, and he had a tape backup of some sort. "glee" wrote in message ... I followed the procedure that I did because the hard drive that I replaced
was bad and could not be copied. (Copying my old hard drive would be my first choice, if I had a choice.) The bios could not detect it and the manufacturers diags could not detect it. And I tried it in another computer. There was a lengthy discussion concerning my hard drive in the Community Newsgroup under "Windows 98 General". It was titled "Disk Boot Failure, Insert system disk an....." dated 11/19/2004 My copy of Win98SE would not install without first installing Win98. That shouldn't cause a problem. I use HP Colorado tape for backups on my Win98 system. There is an option to backup the registry. When you restore it you are given the option of restoring the windows registry without the Hardware or System settings. It is recommended that you don't restore the Hardware and System settings if you have installed a new hard drive. OK....I did not read your thread of Nov. 19. I do not think I would have followed
the recommendation to *not* restore the Hardware and System settings, and I am not sure why they make that recommendation. Certainly, if you had changed the motherboard and/or processor I could see the reason, but not for just a hard drive change, IMO. I might have opted to restore it all, and then boot into Safe Mode to remove any hard drives listed there in Device Manager (along with removing all instances of any device that showed duplicates there), followed by a restart in normal mode. At this point, with the errors in IE even after a reinstall, its hard to see what the cause may be. I would either use Add\Remove to 'restore the previous Windows configuration', and then reinstall IE6 and OE6; or restore the complete backup and start over. BTW, you cannot have IE6 SP2 unless you are running Windows XP. The highest version of IE available for Win98/98SE is IE6 SP1. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "marcew" wrote in message ... You're right about the hardware and systems setting in the registry. The
hard drive shouldn't matter. So I decided to re-install Win98 and Win98SE and restore the data on the back up tape including the windows registry and the hardware and systems settings in the registry and everything seems to be working ok now. I probably didn't need to re-install the operating system again but I decided to do the whole thing over anyway. Thanks, Marc "glee" wrote: OK....I did not read your thread of Nov. 19. I do not think I would have followed the recommendation to *not* restore the Hardware and System settings, and I am not sure why they make that recommendation.
