I have Outlook Express with my Win98SE.

My default email client is Pegasus. Can worms still make use of
Outlook Express?

Yes. If you don't use it, uninstall it. When properly configured and kept up
to date, OE is not normally a problem, especially if you have all the other
normal protection in place.

But if you don't use it, you're less likely to remember to do those things.

Are you really saying we can UNinstall OE and it won't
matter to our system???

Wooo Hooo! I've never tried it (using or uninstalling).
How do I uninstall it? I don't see it in add/remove
programs.

Hi,

Uninstall it via add/remove programs. It should be listed as Microsoft
Outlook Express. (First, look for updates to OE that are listed in
add/remove programs and remove those.)

Then go to the Windows Setup tab in add/remove programs and uncheck the
box next to address book to uninstall that from your system.

If you prefer not to uninstall OE and don't use it, then still remove
the address book, open OE and remove any and all accounts that may be
set-up and set your firewall to always deny OE access to the internet
and local network if you're on one.

This may be a dumb question, but can't you just change the .exe file to
something like .old?

If "Microsoft Outlook Express" doesn't appear in Add/Remove Programs, then
it's probably in Windows Setup tab of Add/Remove Programs. (Tha'ts where it
will be if you never upgraded it after installing Windows.)

If you can't find it in either place, there may be command lines you can
locate in the Registry, but I've asked for help from others with that issue
(uninstall strings for various OE versions when the usual places to
uninstall it aren't found.)

However, you should, as noted, also uninstall Address Book if you aren't
using it. While I'm still trying to find more definitive articles, here's
one that might interest you for it's hints on how to clean up afterwards.

Done. Thanks - I didn't think of looking under "microsoft"!

That address book has been unchecked for a long time (didn't
even know it meant OE)... If anyone here ever wants to use
OE, they can reinstall it from disk or download a newer
version.
