Default Registry Editor launching on start-up

My Registry Editor starts up every time I start the computer. A small
inconvenience, I only need to close it, but obviously there is something
wrong in the start-up area. I cleared out some backed-up files and was
asked about a short-cut (did I want to redirect, etc.) and said yes. Seems
to me that some short-cut is now opening the Registry Editor.

Any advice would be HUGELY welcome. Any way that I can find out which
short-cut is opening the Registry Editor file?

Chris

Restart the computer, tap the F8 key repeatedly until the startup menu
appears and select "Step by step confirmation". This should allow you
to identify the part of the boot process from which the program is
loading.

Thanks. I'm afraid that I don't know enough about what I'm looking at, as
the start-up commands don't exactly say "This is the Registry Editor". Is
there no other way to find out the short-cut that is opening a file?

Default Registry Editor launching on start-up

The idea behind "Step by step confirmation" is to continue until the problem
occurs, then take note of the last step executed. For example, if you
execute "Process startup items?" and the registry editor starts, it is probably
starting from the "c:\windows\start menu\programs\startup" folder. If it
starts after "Process registry?", it is starting from the registry, possibly
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Cur rentVersion\Run".
When you find a suspect shortcut, right-click it, select "Properties" and
see if the "Target" mentions "Scanreg".

Correction.

Actually, you should be looking for "Regedit" in the "Target".

Ben

I really appreciate you help here. I've done the F8 thing. However, when I
go for step-by-step confirmation, I am just confirming a sequence of
questions on a black screen. The computer isn't going through the start-up
process in stages, and waiting for my next go-ahead. Is this what you mean?
Bear with me! The advice that you are giving doesn't tie-in with what I'm
seeing on screen.

Go to the start menu, run and type: msconfig and click OK. When
the screen appears, click the startup tab. See if there is a reference to:
regedit.exe and if so, remove the mark from the box and click OK.

Check in Msconfig for any oddities.
(Start-Run-MSCONFIG-Startup tab)
If you cannot see anything in Msconfig then:

Start-Run-msinfo32
Click the + beside Software Environment to expand.
Click Startup Programs
Ctrl+A to Select All, Ctrl+C to Copy.
Paste that information in your message.

I suspect the registry editor won't be launched until the final stages of bootup.
If you don't want to go through everything else, try examining the shortcuts in
"c:\windows\start menu\programs\startup" as well as the ones referred to
in the
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Cur rentVersion\Run".
registry key.
