2 things I wish I could fix on W98
I have a nice stable install of W98 and it goes okay. But there are two
bugs which almost drive me mental (though not mental enough to downgrade to XP). Firstly, the OS almost grinds to a halt and takes about 1 minute to respond to any mouseclick, but this happens only after I've deleted many megabytes of files (as I often do when editing sets of images). I presume that maybe my RAM is full. I have 256M, and I don't see much point in upgrading that because even 512 would eventually fill up too, if that is the problem. I want someone to tell me there's some setting which will release the memory...am I dreaming? Secondly, even though I've set the file view to be 'details' for all folders, many existing and all new folders still show files in icon view. I've even used tweakUI to set this but it never holds. In fact XP often reverts to icon view too, I've noticed. And while I'm at it, how do I turn off the windows logon which appears whenever I boot? TIA. |

Don't look for any more improvements for W9X, those operating systems have
reached the end of their marketing cycles. "Rodney" wrote in message ... | Secondly, even though I've set the file view to be 'details' for all | folders, many existing and all new folders still show files in icon view. Yay! Trudy, my favourite annoyance also, I look forward to the replies. |

You've probably already considered this, but in case you haven't, see if you can find a copy of "Windows 98 Annoyances" on ebay or Abebooks.com, which deals with just about every Win98 complaint. FWIW on my old Dell w/ 98SE I used to constantly have to readjust the folder options settings. Now, newish white box computer w/ same OS I never have this problem. I don't know why this is so, but it indicates to me that the can't-sit-still folder display problem at least is solvable. |

I want someone to tell me there's some setting which will release the memory...am I dreaming? The process of Deleting files is essentially a renaming process. If you're talking about many, many files (size makes no difference), it's going to take the system a while. No, more RAM makes little difference (unless you're very short on RAM, anyway.) More CPU speed does, and HD size and speed factors in. But it's *mostly* Resources, and in Win9x that's a problem you can't get away from (See http://aumha.org/win4/a/resource.htm.) Only "solution" is to switch to XP, but even then, when I delete thousands of files at once, on my XP/2.1GHz/2GB RAM machine, it still slows for a few beats. Also, you don't mention if it's Windows Explorer you are using to delete normal files, or some other program you're using to delete images from within an album. If your system only slows down or freezes *while* the deletion process is taking place, or for a short period thereafter, count yourself lucky. If it remains a problem thereafter, until you reboot, *then* you have a problem. Questions for further consideration: Are you using Windows Explorer to delete the files? Have you considered using Shift-Delete? It bypasses the Recycle Bin and permanently deletes the files. Secondly, even though I've set the file view to be 'details' for all folders, many existing and all new folders still show files in icon view. I've even used tweakUI to set this but it never holds. In fact XP often reverts to icon view too, I've noticed. I can only suggest a couple of things. IME, TweakUI is *responsible* for more problems like this than it fixes. TUI is, I suppose, OK for tweaking, until something goes wrong. But once something *does* go wrong, it's pretty much irrepairable until a reformat/reinstall is performed. If you were messing with TUI to do *anything* before this problem commenced, I would give 20-1 odds that TUI caused it. You might try Repairing or force-reinstalling IE. You might also try this: First, undo whatever TUI settings might be invloved, if possible (which may not be the case.) Open Explorer to a standard, whitebread folder (IOW, not a system or root folder). Check Folder Options to make sure you aren't using any "WebView" options--we want Classic Windows all the way. Also go into View tab and make sure "Remember Each Folder's View Settings" is DISABLED. OK your way out. Now set up that folder the way you want the default. Now go back to Folder Options, View tab and set all folders "Like Current". OK, OK. Now hold down the left Ctrl key and close the windows using the red X at upper right. Test. Like I said, TUI, once invloved, makes the whole thing a crap-shoot. Good luck. And while I'm at it, how do I turn off the windows logon which appears whenever I boot? What are you seeing, and how are you logging on now? -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP for Win9x |

I hope to change that by using all my available resources and will show how
the NT source code is still too vulnerable to threats. I will be at the company meeting and am in frequent talks with Microsoft about the situation. "Papa" wrote in message ... It isn't a RAM problem. Many with IE6 SP1 suffer instability after a
large delete in Explorer. The delete gets done, but everything Explorer related (even the START button) will work slowly afterwards, even clicking to close the Explorer window. A reboot cures it. I've seen 20 MINUTE DELAYS after deleting a folder that held .5 GB. Here is the best thing to do... If you are certain it is not a system file/folder or otherwise important, then... (1) "START, Programs, MS-DOS Prompt". (2) Type "DEL " at the C:\ Prompt, if it is a file, or Type "DELTREE " instead, if it is a folder. (No quotes, but there is a space.) (3) Open Explorer to that file/folder. (4) Grab the file/folder with the R-Mouse button & drag it over the Prompt button in the Taskbar. (5) When the DOS window opens, drop the file into it. Hit the Enter key, if you've dragged the right one into there. If that doesn't do it (because the file is in use), then "START, Shut down, Restart in MS-DOS mode", and DEL the short name there. -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "trudy" wrote in message ... | I have a nice stable install of W98 and it goes okay. 1. Are you using IE6? If so, your first complaint may be caused by it. If
you can revert back to IE5.5 SP2, this may solve the deletion problem. Unfortunately, SP2 is no longer available on the MS web site. 2. Set your view preferences as you want them, click on view, folder options, view tab and click the button: Like current folder 3. Tweak UI, Boot tab: remove the mark from: Display splash.... -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "trudy" wrote in message ...
