Default CAN'T INSTALL BELKIN NIC DRIVERS

Hello MEB,

I've had some time to examine your webpage, lots of useful stuff on
networking and problems with, but I didn't find much on troubleshooting
adapter installation. But to answer your last questions about the EXACT
error message, this happens on boot-up and/or restart: Windows Networking
window pops up...
"Your network adapter Belkin Wireless 54Mbps Desktop Adapter (0001) is not
working properly. You may need to set it up again. For more information,
see the Network Troubleshooter in Windows Help".

You also asked what is listed in Control PanelNetworks:
Client for Microsoft Networks
Belkin Wireless 54Mbps Desktop Adapter
Dial-Up Adapter
TCP/IP-Belkin Wireless 54Mbps Desktop Adapter
TCP/IP-Dial-Up Adapter
and...
Primary Network Logon: Windows Logon.

There's no problems with the modem/router as 3 other remote computers in my
network connect to it OK. Have we come to the end of the road?

Cheers, Sandy.

| I've
| | got it
| | | &
| | | | see what happens.
| | |
| | | Okay, if you look through some of those other links you'll note

| | has
| | | also occurred to others ... regretfully you are also "being put

| | the
| | | wringer" with your card.
| | |
| | | |
| | | | Just been looking through the other links you suggested...
perhaps
| I
| | | should
| | | | be grateful I've got a Belkin & not a Linksys! General theme
| seems to
| | be
| | | | change the card. Hmmm. Not convinced - yet.
| | |
| | | Well you have to remember that 98 was designed more for phone
| access,
| | and
| | | within a network [business/commercial] which was handled by IT
or
| other
| | | "experts". And these newer adapters are not designed for 98 or
the
| older
| | | NTs. Not that the drivers would be difficult to provide, but
that
| the
| | | manufacturer's programmers rely more upon Microsoft, and of
course,
| the
| | | necessary MS certification. Moreover, the programmers can no
longer
| call
| | | Microsoft to discuss issues that might occur in Microsoft's
| un-supported
| | | OSs, so that leaves them as needing to actually know how to
program.
| | Look at
| | | any of the newer devices and you find these same difficulties.
| | |
| | | |
| | | | Yes, on your other point I did go into Safe Mode to remove the
| | 'device'
| | | | because you're right, previous experience on this ghosting
anomaly
| can
| | be
| | | | quite revealing, all taking up valuable resources.
| | |
| | | Yes, that's always been important. Many later errors and issues
can
| be
| | | back-traced to these ghosts.
| | |
| | | |
| | | | Finally, like I said when playing last night, I did remove all
| network
| | | | protocols, clients et al. I must admit I can't remember if I
| closed
| | down
| | | | before re-installing them or not. Can a card's drivers be
loaded
| | before
| | | the
| | | | Network elements are put in or does the network
clients/protocols
| have
| | to
| | | be
| | | | in place first?
| | |
| | | Okay, make sure you shutdown before resetting the network.
There is
| | | potentially a DUN issue [yeah we scratch our heads on this one,
| dial-up,
| | | huh, why would that effect a network adapter, but it IS part of
the
| | | network]. The card drivers can be added as soon as possible, you
| should
| | have
| | | had the Startup/New hardware found, ask for the drivers upon
| startup,
| | which
| | | then are supposed to install the necessary TCP/IP and other
files.
| | | One thing I have found, is having the CABS for 98 in
| | | {drive}:\Windows\Options\CABS, seems to ease installation of
most
| | devices.
| | | Just copy the Win98 folder and contents from the CD to that
folder.
| | |
| | | One registry entry needs changed though, so installations look
| there
| | rather
| | | than asking for the CDROM:
| | | ---------
| | | REGEDIT4
| | |
| | |
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Setup]
| | | "SourcePath"="C:\\WINDOWS\\OPTIONS\\CABS\\"
| | |
| | | -----------
| | | This can be placed into a TEXT editor [including the blank
line],
| saved
| | as
| | | option-source.reg, and merged. Modify that to your actual
windows
| | | directory/folder if necessary.
| | | It works much better if it was done before the update process
as
| any
| | | updated files are/were copied/placed there as well, meaning you
| won't be
| | | installing OLD outdated files from the CDROM.
| | |
| | | On installers generally:
| | | Looking at a number of NEW installers, I note that they
constantly
| check
| | for
| | | "administrator rights" [something necessary for NT] and NT
files,
| and
| | fail
| | | to include the old variables for "if its not present then do"
| [that's
| | not
| | | the actual inclusions just what was done] which the OLD cross
| platform
| | | installers included.
| | | The cross platforms now being addressed are XP and the
necessary
| VISTA
| | | "special" envelope/requirements.
| | |
| | | Let us know how it goes...
| | |
| | | |
| | | | Right! I better speak to the other guys now. Thanks for your
| help
| | MEB.
| | | |

| | | Well you have to remember that 98 was designed more for
phone
| access,
| | and
| | | within a network [business/commercial] which was handled by
IT
or
| other
| | | "experts". And these newer adapters are not designed for 98
or
the
| older
| | | NTs. Not that the drivers would be difficult to provide, but
that
| the
| | | manufacturer's programmers rely more upon Microsoft, and of
course,
| the
| | | necessary MS certification. Moreover, the programmers can no
longer
| call
| | | Microsoft to discuss issues that might occur in Microsoft's
| un-supported
| | | OSs, so that leaves them as needing to actually know how to
program.
| | Look at
| | | any of the newer devices and you find these same
difficulties.
| | |
| | | |
| | | | Yes, on your other point I did go into Safe Mode to remove
the
| | 'device'
| | | | because you're right, previous experience on this ghosting
anomaly
| can
| | be
| | | | quite revealing, all taking up valuable resources.
| | |
| | | Yes, that's always been important. Many later errors and
issues
can
| be
| | | back-traced to these ghosts.
| | |
| | | |
| | | | Finally, like I said when playing last night, I did remove
all
| network
| | | | protocols, clients et al. I must admit I can't remember if
I
| closed
| | down
| | | | before re-installing them or not. Can a card's drivers be
loaded
| | before
| | | the
| | | | Network elements are put in or does the network
clients/protocols
| have
| | to
| | | be
| | | | in place first?
| | |
| | | Okay, make sure you shutdown before resetting the network.
There is
| | | potentially a DUN issue [yeah we scratch our heads on this
one,
| dial-up,
| | | huh, why would that effect a network adapter, but it IS part
of
the
| | | network]. The card drivers can be added as soon as possible,
you
| should
| | have
| | | had the Startup/New hardware found, ask for the drivers upon
| startup,
| | which
| | | then are supposed to install the necessary TCP/IP and other
files.
| | | One thing I have found, is having the CABS for 98 in
| | | {drive}:\Windows\Options\CABS, seems to ease installation of
most
| | devices.
| | | Just copy the Win98 folder and contents from the CD to that
folder.
| | |
| | | One registry entry needs changed though, so installations
look
| there
| | rather
| | | than asking for the CDROM:
| | | ---------
| | | REGEDIT4
| | |
| | |
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Setup]
| | | "SourcePath"="C:\\WINDOWS\\OPTIONS\\CABS\\"
| | |
| | | -----------
| | | This can be placed into a TEXT editor [including the blank
line],
| saved
| | as
| | | option-source.reg, and merged. Modify that to your actual
windows
| | | directory/folder if necessary.
| | | It works much better if it was done before the update
process
as
| any
| | | updated files are/were copied/placed there as well, meaning
you
| won't be
| | | installing OLD outdated files from the CDROM.
| | |
| | | On installers generally:
| | | Looking at a number of NEW installers, I note that they
constantly
| check
| | for
| | | "administrator rights" [something necessary for NT] and NT
files,
| and
| | fail
| | | to include the old variables for "if its not present then do"
| [that's
| | not
| | | the actual inclusions just what was done] which the OLD cross
| platform
| | | installers included.
| | | The cross platforms now being addressed are XP and the
necessary
| VISTA
| | | "special" envelope/requirements.
| | |
| | | Let us know how it goes...
| | |
| | | |
| | | | Right! I better speak to the other guys now. Thanks for
your
| help
| | MEB.
| | | |

Default CAN'T INSTALL BELKIN NIC DRIVERS

Hi Gary,
Yes, the procedure is install the software, then install the card, then let
Windows Plug n' Pray to install the drivers as per the manual (as per your
link). Believe me, this has been done soooo many times! Cheers,
Sandy.

Hello MEB,

I've had some time to examine your webpage, lots of useful stuff on
networking and problems with, but I didn't find much on troubleshooting
adapter installation. But to answer your last questions about the EXACT
error message, this happens on boot-up and/or restart: Windows Networking
window pops up...
"Your network adapter Belkin Wireless 54Mbps Desktop Adapter (0001) is not
working properly. You may need to set it up again. For more information,
see the Network Troubleshooter in Windows Help".

You also asked what is listed in Control PanelNetworks:
Client for Microsoft Networks
Belkin Wireless 54Mbps Desktop Adapter
Dial-Up Adapter
TCP/IP-Belkin Wireless 54Mbps Desktop Adapter
TCP/IP-Dial-Up Adapter
and...
Primary Network Logon: Windows Logon.

There's no problems with the modem/router as 3 other remote computers in
my
network connect to it OK. Have we come to the end of the road?

Cheers, Sandy.

Default CAN'T INSTALL BELKIN NIC DRIVERS

Sorry, slightly distracted. Did you check for proper TCP/IP settings, or did
you not get that far?

IF the card is shown, but not working properly AND you did check the TCP/IP
and it is correct, did you check for an upgrade {BIOS} for the device?

Winipcfg Details {what}?

Are you also using ICS in the system {or did you at one time?}?

Did you try the ping diagnostics?

| | | | | fumbling way trying to muddle through. There are some
extra

| | I
| | | can
| | | | try
| | | | | but what is really useful is I can follow through in a
logical
| | | sequence.
| | | | | However, looking at the points between steps 15 & 16 ( I
was
| | having
| | | | another
| | | | | go last night whilst waiting for this post), I noticed the
| card
| | was
| | | not
| | | | | identified. However, I will go through Netgears' sequence
now
| | I've
| | | got it
| | | | &
| | | | | see what happens.
| | | |
| | | | Okay, if you look through some of those other links you'll
note
| | that
| | | has
| | | | also occurred to others ... regretfully you are also "being
put

| | | the
| | | | wringer" with your card.
| | | |
| | | | |
| | | | | Just been looking through the other links you suggested...
| perhaps
| | I
| | | | should
| | | | | be grateful I've got a Belkin & not a Linksys! General
theme
| | seems to
| | | be
| | | | | change the card. Hmmm. Not convinced - yet.
| | | |
| | | | Well you have to remember that 98 was designed more for
phone
| | access,
| | | and
| | | | within a network [business/commercial] which was handled by
IT
| or
| | other
| | | | "experts". And these newer adapters are not designed for 98
or
| the
| | older
| | | | NTs. Not that the drivers would be difficult to provide, but
| that
| | the
| | | | manufacturer's programmers rely more upon Microsoft, and of
| course,
| | the
| | | | necessary MS certification. Moreover, the programmers can no
| longer
| | call
| | | | Microsoft to discuss issues that might occur in Microsoft's
| | un-supported
| | | | OSs, so that leaves them as needing to actually know how to
| program.
| | | Look at
| | | | any of the newer devices and you find these same
difficulties.
| | | |
| | | | |
| | | | | Yes, on your other point I did go into Safe Mode to remove
the
| | | 'device'
| | | | | because you're right, previous experience on this ghosting
| anomaly
| | can
| | | be
| | | | | quite revealing, all taking up valuable resources.
| | | |
| | | | Yes, that's always been important. Many later errors and
issues
| can
| | be
| | | | back-traced to these ghosts.
| | | |
| | | | |
| | | | | Finally, like I said when playing last night, I did remove
all
| | network
| | | | | protocols, clients et al. I must admit I can't remember
if I
| | closed
| | | down
| | | | | before re-installing them or not. Can a card's drivers be
| loaded
| | | before
| | | | the
| | | | | Network elements are put in or does the network
| clients/protocols
| | have
| | | to
| | | | be
| | | | | in place first?
| | | |
| | | | Okay, make sure you shutdown before resetting the network.
| There is
| | | | potentially a DUN issue [yeah we scratch our heads on this
one,
| | dial-up,
| | | | huh, why would that effect a network adapter, but it IS part
of
| the
| | | | network]. The card drivers can be added as soon as possible,
you
| | should
| | | have
| | | | had the Startup/New hardware found, ask for the drivers upon
| | startup,
| | | which
| | | | then are supposed to install the necessary TCP/IP and other
| files.
| | | | One thing I have found, is having the CABS for 98 in
| | | | {drive}:\Windows\Options\CABS, seems to ease installation of
| most
| | | devices.
| | | | Just copy the Win98 folder and contents from the CD to that
| folder.
| | | |
| | | | One registry entry needs changed though, so installations
look
| | there
| | | rather
| | | | than asking for the CDROM:
| | | | ---------
| | | | REGEDIT4
| | | |
| | | |
| [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Setup]
| | | | "SourcePath"="C:\\WINDOWS\\OPTIONS\\CABS\\"
| | | |
| | | | -----------
| | | | This can be placed into a TEXT editor [including the blank
| line],
| | saved
| | | as
| | | | option-source.reg, and merged. Modify that to your actual
| windows
| | | | directory/folder if necessary.
| | | | It works much better if it was done before the update
process
| as
| | any
| | | | updated files are/were copied/placed there as well, meaning
you
| | won't be
| | | | installing OLD outdated files from the CDROM.
| | | |
| | | | On installers generally:
| | | | Looking at a number of NEW installers, I note that they
| constantly
| | check
| | | for
| | | | "administrator rights" [something necessary for NT] and NT
| files,
| | and
| | | fail
| | | | to include the old variables for "if its not present then
do"
| | [that's
| | | not
| | | | the actual inclusions just what was done] which the OLD
cross
| | platform
| | | | installers included.
| | | | The cross platforms now being addressed are XP and the
| necessary
| | VISTA
| | | | "special" envelope/requirements.
| | | |
| | | | Let us know how it goes...
| | | |

Default CAN'T INSTALL BELKIN NIC DRIVERS

Hi MEB, good to hear from you... yes, as far as I'm aware, my TCP/IP settings
are right. As far as the BIOS upgrade for the Belkin... I didn't know there
was one, I'll check. I haven't gone down the road of pinging or running
winipcfg as I thought the adapter had to be working first??? And finally no,
I don't use ICS as the other computers belong to my son next door so we have
no need to share files etc.!
Cheers, Sandy.

Default CAN'T INSTALL BELKIN NIC DRIVERS

Hi MEB, good to hear from you... yes, as far as I'm aware, my TCP/IP settings
are right. As far as the BIOS upgrade for the Belkin... I didn't know there
was one, I'll check. I haven't gone down the road of pinging or running
winipcfg as I thought the adapter had to be working first??? And finally no,
I don't use ICS as the other computers belong to my son next door so we have
no need to share files etc.!
Cheers, Sandy.

Are you also using ICS in the system {or did you at one time?}?

Did you try the ping diagnostics?

Default CAN'T INSTALL BELKIN NIC DRIVERS

This is a wireless adapter, MEB. I haven't done a lot of wireless in either
98 or XP, but I don't believe any of the settings or winipcfg are at all
involved. But maybe I'm wrong. (This is making me want to go to Buy.com and
get a few examples to have on hand.)

one,
| | dial-up,
| | | | huh, why would that effect a network adapter, but it IS
part
of

possible,
you
| | should
| | | have
| | | | had the Startup/New hardware found, ask for the drivers
upon
| | startup,
| | | which
| | | | then are supposed to install the necessary TCP/IP and
other
| files.
| | | | One thing I have found, is having the CABS for 98 in
| | | | {drive}:\Windows\Options\CABS, seems to ease installation
of
| most
| | | devices.
| | | | Just copy the Win98 folder and contents from the CD to
that
| folder.
| | | |
| | | | One registry entry needs changed though, so installations
look
| | there
| | | rather
| | | | than asking for the CDROM:
| | | | ---------
| | | | REGEDIT4
| | | |
| | | |
| [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Setup]
| | | | "SourcePath"="C:\\WINDOWS\\OPTIONS\\CABS\\"
| | | |
| | | | -----------
| | | | This can be placed into a TEXT editor [including the
blank
| line],
| | saved
| | | as
| | | | option-source.reg, and merged. Modify that to your actual
| windows
| | | | directory/folder if necessary.
| | | | It works much better if it was done before the update
process
| as
| | any
| | | | updated files are/were copied/placed there as well,
meaning
you
| | won't be
| | | | installing OLD outdated files from the CDROM.
| | | |
| | | | On installers generally:
| | | | Looking at a number of NEW installers, I note that they
| constantly
| | check
| | | for
| | | | "administrator rights" [something necessary for NT] and NT
| files,
| | and
| | | fail
| | | | to include the old variables for "if its not present then
do"
| | [that's
| | | not
| | | | the actual inclusions just what was done] which the OLD
cross
| | platform
| | | | installers included.
| | | | The cross platforms now being addressed are XP and the
| necessary
| | VISTA
| | | | "special" envelope/requirements.
| | | |
| | | | Let us know how it goes...
