Hi Vicky & StuartN,

I am assuming you had access to the A:\ drive previous to this message!

Restart the computer. Hold CTRL while the system is booting.
Pick Command prompt only and test the drive. Type DIR and
press enter. You should see the directory tree. If you see the
tree this rules out any hardware issues.

Next I would suggest doing a virus scan with up to date virus
software, then scan for and removing any installed spyware.
If you are in need of virus software, here are a couple to choose from, for
free.
Download the software, and in Update Manager run Update
then do a complete virus scan.
Free Offer: eTrust EZ Armor Security Suite from Computer Associates
http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/index.cfm

Search and destroy any installed SpyWare/malware/adwa
Ad-aware is a free multi spyware removal utility that scans
your memory, registry and hard drives for known spyware
components and lets you remove them safely. After installing
Ad-Aware make sure to run the update feature before scanning.
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ For large amounts of installed
spyware and such, it may be necessary to run Ad-Aware several
times to clear them all.

Here are a couple more removal tools that should also be run.
CWShredder: http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php#cwshred

Spybot: http://www.safer-networking.org/

SpywareBlaster:
http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareblaster.html
SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it
prevents it from ever being installed. SpywareBlaster is
a non memory resident utility. It works by setting a "kill bit"
for the CLSIDs of spyware ActiveX controls, it prevents the
installation of any of them from a webpage.

Thanks for your reply Bert,
You assume correctly about previous access.
I have since tried accessing through DOS, no problem, I had tried another
floppy drive which came up with the same error so I assumed it would be a
software issue.
Running AntiVirus came up with nothing, I haven't done a spyware check as
this PC has never been connected to the internet. (right or wrong I'm not
sure).
What I have done is reinstalled Win98SE over itself and given the floppy a
good clean out (big dust build up).
Now I try testing by copying a file to C: and I get error message Cannot
copy file: File system error (1026)
Any other ideas, apart from a new PC?

Thanks again,

Hi Stuart,

Restart your computer by holding down the ctrl key and use the
"boot menu" to enter a safe mode windows session. Then in Device
Manager, locate and delete floppy drives *and* the floppy disk controllers.
Restart to see if Win98 re-detects properly. Now test the drive in Windows.

Here's another possibility.
