File icon will not change
W98SE
I was using a archive utility and had changed the file association so the icon was one I liked. I changed my zip file association to a different archiver, using Winfile which seems to work very well for this. The new archiver now opens zip files. The new archiver default icon was undesirable. I went to Explorer/Folder Options/File Types, zip file, Edit, change Icon, browsed to my Icon folder, picked the desired icon. But a zip file still shows the wrong icon. I did a hot boot, no change. Cold boot, no change. I went back to File Types, it shows the changed correct icon, but actual zip files still show the wrong icon. How to make this icon change so it takes effect? |

Have you tried deleting the icon cache?
Delete the shelliconcache file from Safe Mode, per the instructions he Icons Displayed Incorrectly in Control Panel: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=133733 Or, Click StartSettings Control Panel Display Appearance tab: Click the "Item:" drop-down list and select "Icon" Note the current icon size in the "Size:" box next to that. Change the size, click Apply. Change the size back to what it was, click OK. Or, If you have TweakUI installed, click Start Settings Control Panel TweakUI "Repair" tab, select "Rebuild Icons" and click Repair Now. Download and install TweakUI1.33: http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstati.../nttweakui.asp Follow the installation instructions on that web page. Following that, setting the Max Icon Cache setting in the Registry to 2048 would be good preventive practice: http://www.aumha.org/regfiles.htm Scroll to 'IconCache Fix', download, unzip, then right-click the enclosed .reg file, click Merge on the menu that appears, and OK to the confirmation message. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "ms" wrote in message ... ms wrote: W98SE I was using a archive utility and had changed the file association so the icon was one I liked. This is probably the result of duplicate icons clogging up the
shelliconcache file. There is freeware that will clean the file and increase the default size (do both): http://www.cursorarts.com/ca_ai_b.html -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP Windows 98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "ms" wrote in message ... ms wrote: W98SE I was using a archive utility and had changed the file association so the icon was one I liked. Thanks very much for the info. Problem was fixed as below. Have you tried deleting the icon cache? Delete the shelliconcache file from Safe Mode, per the instructions he Icons Displayed Incorrectly in Control Panel: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=133733 Several years ago, my total icons were measured and a low number so this seemed a little risky for me. Or, Click StartSettings Control Panel Display Appearance tab: Click the "Item:" drop-down list and select "Icon" Note the current icon size in the "Size:" box next to that. Change the size, click Apply. Change the size back to what it was, click OK. Size was 32, left it. I had Tweakui, ran Rebuild Icons, things happened as below. Ran this. After reboot, a bunch of file associations had to be corrected, the problem icon was still a problem. After several reboots, my correct icon for the archive utility now shows, everything's fine. IMO, the cache setting by Jim Eshelman is safe. Tweakui Rebuild Icons may have caused new problems. Also, how in Windows can I measure my total installed icons? Comment, please. |
