Default Missing WordPerfect and Excel

I had to erase my hard drive and when I rebooted and re-
installed my software again, I can't get WordPerfect or
Excel back. I now have Works instead. Must have been
factory installed. The computer keeps saying the cd
needs "cleaning or re-insert". What do I do to get another
copy without paying for it all over again?

Check the disks and documentation that came with the PC. Neither Corel
WordPerfect nor Microsoft Excel are part of Win Me or any other operating
system and will either have been included as part of an OEM install
(although I have never previously read of WordPerfect being included by an
OEM) or were purchased and installed by yourself after you purchased your
PC.

Mike,

I have the CD and it was installed when I got the pc or at
least part of the software package. Anyway, how do I clean
a CD without damaging it? That's what the PC says the CD
needs. Thanks, Donna

Donna,

It rather depends on how badly damaged the CD is. What do you do when you
have a similar problem with an audio CD? Personally if the CD surface is
just "grubby" rather than scratched I use a cheap proprietary water based
window cleaner (not one of those cream types) that includes vinegar and a
degreaser. Works perfectly for me. Scratches are somewhat different. If
after cleaning you have problems with a scratch then either buy a scratch
remover from your local record shop or, if brave, try a little toothpaste
and slowly work it to remove the scratch but be very careful you don't
make the problem worse.

Mike,

Thanks for the info. I haven't had probs with audio CDs
and wasn't sure. I didn't want to cause any damage. Have a
great weekend.

I use the little towelettes that I also use to clean my glasses. I don't
know it they sell them in your country but they work great on CDs and DVDs
when dirty and you don't run the risk of making the problem worse. I have no
idea what the towelettes have on them but they have never messed up
anything.

You can also buy special CD cleaning kits at any computer or department
store.

Mike,

FWIW, it used to be quite common here in Oz for WordPerfect to be
bundled. A computer I purchased 4 years ago came with WP8 and the
installation media is on the PC200 System Board CD.

I remember the OEM telling me it only cost him $8 for WordPerfect

Alan,

Interesting. As you're probably aware I'm a long term (c18 years) WP user
and don't think I've ever seen WP packaged with a PC here in the UK which
does surprise me a little. I'm pleased to read that Corel are or at least
were a bit more active in Oz than over here as cost is one area where they
should have been able to meet MS head on.

Hi Mike.....

I bought the Academic Version of WordPerfect when I got my first
computer......available to teachers, nurses and Old Age Pensioners. At the
time, it was just $50 as opposed to $700 or so, and probably isn't the full
version.

But Dell, for instance, is including it with every new computer.....and I
have seen other OEM's (such as my own....MDG) advertising it as a freebie.
So Corel is getting a wedge in the door.

FWIW, they fired the Canadian CEO and since then things have been different.
(translation - better)

Cheers.......Figgs
