Default Ethernet Controller?

Was going to work on Start menu from the other thread on this computer, but
another issue came up.

I am starting to configure a DUN configuration, Network was showing TCP/IP
and several other usual entries and a icon, no description. Properties said
it was for NT??? so I removed it. It said reboot, then asked for files on
W98 disk, it would not search there, I finally canceled and booted normal.
I looked in DM, I see question mark for 3Com PCI Eternet Controller. I
deleted it as I use DUN.

Now every reboot, it finds that PCI controller as new hardware and
reinstalls it, asking for files.

Advice?

Another issue: On initial BIOS screen, I see MBA- Managed PC Boot Agent.

What is this?

Get past the prompt to install the NIC (or find the drivers and properly
install it) then go to Device Manager, find the NIC (probably with yellow
exclamation point), right-click the item, then Properties, then "Disable in
this profile" (or something similar.)

Finding "new" hardware on reboot will continue so
long as you have Ethernet hardware that is not
configured for use. Most PCs allow you to disable
Ethernet in BIOS (by interrupting reboot early with
a key identified in the first message on screen --
usually DELete; and then locate the right setting
in the BIOS menus and reset it and key Save & Exit.)

Your old Registry recorded the full filepath of certain
system files when Win98 was first installed (i.e.
usually to the CD as drive D If you later added a
drive, the saved filepath no longer works: but you
can usually /Browse to the new correct filepath.

Thanks to all, a backup reg to yesterday, and disable in current profile
should take care of it.

Any ideas on this? I never saw it on any other machine.

Also, on bootup, screen says- initializing MBA, Lanmark 2000 subsidiary
of 3Com. Is something running at bootup that is not needed?

Update- going to yesterdays registry, and disabling the 3Com PCI Eternet
Controller in the current profile fixed the finding new hardware screen
problem.

In DM under Network Adapters: I have 4 entries-

Dialup Adapter - enabled

3Com PCI Eternet Controller- disabled as above

Dialup Adapter #2(VPN Support)- I disabled this

MS Virtual Private Networking Adapter- I disabled this

In the past, in DUN setup issues, it was stated to simplify the Network
area as much as possible, eliminate any unnecessary functions.

Advice?

Um....stop deleting things if you don't know what they are or what they are for.

You need to reinstall the drivers for the 3Com PCI Ethernet Controller.

If you don't want to do that, then you need to let Windows finish the hardware
detection instead of canceling. If Windows can't find the proper driver, and
pointing it to the Windows\Inf folder or the Windows\System folder does not find it,
just click Finish, so it can be installed as an Unknown Device in Device
Manager....then at least it won't be redetected every startup.

Another issue: On initial BIOS screen, I see MBA- Managed PC Boot Agent.

I though Jeff Richards had discussed this in reply to your thread here last month,
Subject: "Error screen + issues"

Google: managed boot agent (MBA)

"Client-based firmware that enables client PCs and network devices to access and
boot from boot image files on a server."

Everything you are doing there, as far as disabling these things, is unnecessary. I
am not sure why you think these need to be disabled. I can understand the Ethernet
controller if you don't use it, though I don't really see the point. You gain
nothing at all by disabling the other items.

Is it OK to allow 4 different adapters simultaenously in the current
profile?

You need to reinstall the drivers for the 3Com PCI Ethernet
Controller.

If you don't want to do that, then you need to let Windows finish the

be installed as an Unknown Device in Device Manager....then at least
it won't be redetected every startup.

In the screen where it shows the path to search for, paste into the
legend slot the desired path ?- otherwise it will not browse to another
location.

Another issue: On initial BIOS screen, I see MBA- Managed PC Boot
Agent.

That must have been another machine I posted about, each had enough
problems, hard to keep track.
