PCI Ethernet Controller

Hi,

Three years ago, I successfully instlled a network card on my Win98 SE
PC.
In Device Manager, the network card is listed as "PCI 10/100 Ethenet
Fast Adaptor".

That network card is dedicated to ADSL, and it has provided pretty
good ADSL connection since then.

I have never touched that network card ... until today. And problem
occurred.

I pulled out the network card from PCI slot 3, and plugged it into
slot 2
(to make sure there is room for plugging another device onto the
mobo).
Then power on the PC.

At bootup, Windows found a "PCI Ethernet Controller" (necessarily
because of the different PCI slot)
and went on to install its driver. But Windows could not find a driver
(the "add new hardware
wizard" popped up).

But there is no manufacturer's driver that comes with the network
card!
So the network card is useless now!

Three questions come to my mind:

(1) First of all, is "PCI Ethernet Controller" the same as a network
card?

(2) Whether "PCI Ethernet Controller" is the network card or not, why
can't Windows
install the driver for my network card? If Windows installed the
driver successfully
three years ago, i.e., the INF file Windows used then must have
been backed up in
C:\Windows\INF or one of its sub-folder, why can't Windows find
the INF now?

(Three years ago Windows installed its own driver for my network
card.)

Even if the INF file is gone for any reason, why can't Windows
just re-install
a driver for such a common network card as "PCI 10/100 Ethenet
Fast Adaptor",
as three years ago? It's unthinkble that Windows could correctly
determine on the type
of my network card, but can't now.

(3) What can I do now to install the driver, except obtaining another
network card?
On the manufacture's web site, I can't find a driver for my
network card,
or there simply may not be one.

I use Win98 SE.

Device Manager beforehand. However, Windows automatically removed
it from Device Manager.

PS2: Though Windows removed the network card from Device Manager, in
the Network applet of

similiar). Also, there is a 'PPP over Ethernet' protocol bound to
that adaptor.
I manually removed both.

Both you and Windows MAY have uninstalled the drivers, but it may still be
there.
Check in Safe Mode for ghost/still installed though useless cards and remove
any shown.

Restart in Normal Mode, if it fails to find new hardware, go to Control
Panel Add New Hardware, let it search..
If it still doesn't find the card, then manually install through the same
interface{it should ask you}. Then scroll to Network Adapters, pick your
manufacturer, pick the card [may ask for the Windows CDROM to finish the
installation, use it or direct to either the system or to the folder where
you have cab files on your hard disk]..likely you will need to re-start,
then you may have to manually configure it.. then check for your network
settings after re-starting again...

Forgot to mention that I have tried putting the network card back to PCI slot
3. But Windows still wanted to install "PCI Ethernet Controller".

ps: I posted this message from MS community web page.

Put the card back in its original slot, then start the computer, tap the
F8 key until the startup menu appears and select "Command Prompt
only". Then type "scanreg /restore" and restore a previous registry.
If this doesn't help, please repost with the manufacturer and model
of the card.

Guess what... I took out the card and plugged it into PCI slot 2 ONCE
AGAIN, and the world is good again!

That PC is nine years old. Oxidized pins, perhaps.

Possibly, or a partially installed card, or..., or the settings were
finally updated properly.

I've never moved a card from one slot to another without win-98
telling me that it "found a new card" and it "needs to install the
drivers" and it asks me where they are and I point it right back at
it's own \windows\system or \system32 directory.

From my own experience, what you've encountered is normal behavior.

But more specifically, I don't think I've ever gotten the first
generation of Intel 100 mbps PCI ethernet controller boards to work in
anything but the first PCI slot right next to the AGP slot. Maybe
you're seeing the same thing.
