Default Trying to change jumper settings-Whole computer no longer works

I had a computer where 98 was installed on a small hard drive, and was
using the bigger hard drive for files. I had to reinstall 98, and
decided to move everything to the bigger hard drive. I backed up my
files, then opened up the computer, disconnected the power and data
cable from the small hard drive, and changed the jumper settings on the
big hard drive to what the sticker on the hard drive said was "Master."
I plugged the computer in, it booted on it's own, but nothing, not
even an error message came up on the screen. I tried not havingn a
jumper in the hard drive, replacing the video card, replacing the old
settings, but nothing works. I tried not to touch anything else in the
computer, although some plires got a little ways down the heat sink,
but I stopped them before they touched the processer. I was not
grounded, but did not feel any static electricty. It seems weird that
not even the BIOS will come up. Did I breaky my (Old) comptuer
somehow, or is there a fix?

Most old hard drives would work on the main board with a 40 wire cable. Most
if not all new hard drives need an 80 wire cable. I have seen where some new
drives would work when set as a slave on the middle connection with only a
40 wire cable.

Since you changed this to master my first thing would be to try an 80 wire
cable if you are currently using a 40.

Not enough info. What happened to the small drive--is it no longer being
used? This is important because some hard drives have two master
settings--one for when it is the sole drive and another when it is being
used with another hard drive.

exactly.....namely, Western Digital drives.

Buckdog, if it is a Western Digital drive, the "Single" jumper setting is used if
the drive is the only hard drive on that channel (Primary or Secondary). The
"Master" and "Slave" settings are only used if there are two hard drives on the same
channel (and cable).

Default Trying to change jumper settings-Whole computer no longer works

Both hard drives are Quantum Fireballs. ONe is 13GB, and the other is
5GB. I have it hooked up like I thought it was before, and it still
won't boot. How to you clear the memory? I am working on an old
Gateway 450, and am using its original hard drive (The only one I want
to use), and one from another old Gateway, also a Quantum Fireball, I
believe.)

Even if the jumper settings were not correct, couldn't I still see the
bios boot on the screen?

I did use a WD Chart for jumper settings, and it seemed to work. The
chart on the hard drive is a bit confusing, but I could try to use
that. I am not positive how I got it to work before. When I was
messing around in there, I noticed that some of the juimpers that I had
never used were bent. I do not think they were touching, but they
might have been. I pried them apart before trying my last boot.

Do the jumper blocks look like this?

Another upside-down view of the same:

This suggests you do not have the drives connected
and jumpered as formerly when the PC booted OK.

How to you clear the memory?

RAM requires power to function, i.e. is cleared every
time you reboot.

Even if the jumper settings were not correct, couldn't I still see the
bios boot on the screen?

Can you boot to a startup floppy? If you do not have one,
download the (correct) one from www.bootdisk.com. This
would give you DOS with CD drives enabled even if
hard drive connections are still wrong, and allow access
to the main board BIOS before that.

I did use a WD Chart for jumper settings, and it seemed to work. The

In your place I should use Quantum information to jumper
Quantum drives, not WD. But you do not need extra information.
You can draw a chart of all possible permutations (guided by
what you read printed on the drives), then select the cases
likeliest to work, then try each in turn, keeping a written
record of results. Relying on memory alone, you may
waste time repeating configurations you have already
discovered do not work.

Yes, ensure you get the jumpers right. Also, remember to plug in the DC power connectors, shown in Glee's diagrams. Finally, be sure the data cable is oriented correctly, before pushing it in. There is a thin red line on one edge of the 40/80 pin data cable that must align with red at the receptor connector. The receptor socket will also have a slot on one long side to match a raised portion in the middle of one side of the data cable plug. Once all is lined up, push it in snugly.

Better be sure the monitor is plugged in, though, because I think you'd see SOMETHING on it, no matter. Also, check the Video Adapter card (if any) has not come loose in it's socket.
