WIN98SE BOOT PROBLEM
I recently installed a new SATA hard drive in my computer along with my
existing ATA hard drive. I want the SATA drive to be my primary boot drive. However, if the ATA drive is the boot drive, the system will not boot but if the SATA drive is the boot drive, the system will boot but the SATA drive is blank and I can't clone the ATA drive to the SATA drive because you can't clone to a boot drive! I tried to clone from the ATA drive to the SATA drive in SAFE mode but that was a disaster and both drives were corrupted. I have since reconstructed the ATA drive. I then ran only the SATA drive and was able to installed the operating system on it. I then reconnected tha ATA drive as the secondary drive and transferred data from it to the SATA drive using the COPY command. This was working but was very slow. Then when I was reinstalling a program to the SATA drive the system froze and the SATA drive became corrupted and would no longer boot. I received messages that the VMM32.VXD file was corrupted or missing and to reinstall the OS which I have done repeatedly but I continue to receive the same message. The VMM32.VXD file does exit in the win/sys directory and it is also in the PATH statement. I have read all of the MS-KB articles that are relevant and impliment their suggestions regarding the VMM32.VXD file, the DIBENG.DLL file and the WININIT.EXE file but to no avail. I don't want to reformat the SATA drive and have to start over from scratch. Does anyone have a solution/suggestion to resolve this dilemma? |

Get a DOS mode cloning utility such as Copy/Wipe from www.bootitng.com (has a free trial period). Boot your computer with a Startup Disk and then use the disk cloning utility. Note that it will expedite the copying process greatly if you put smartdrv.exe onto the boot disk and run it before you start the cloning utility. Good luck Ron Martell Duncan B.C. "R.L. Barnhart" rlb Thank you for your advise. I have downloaded and run the CopyWipe utility. It appears to have copied the info form the ATA to the SATA drive accurately, but when I run the SATA drive as the primary boot drive it will not boot and I am receiving the same message as before "Cannot Start Windows because VMM32.VXD was not found or is damaged. Run SetUp Again". I have run the setup program again and still receive the same message. The ATA drive when run without the SATA drive boots and runs fine but if the SATA drive is connected as the Secondary drive, the ATA drive will not boot and I receive the message 'Windows protection error while initializing device VCOMM. You need to restart your computer'. I restart but get the same message again. It appears that the SATA drive is causing the problem. Do you have any futher ideas/suggestions? ----- Original Message ----- From: Ron Martell Newsgroups: microsoft.public.win98.disks.general Sent: Tuesday, May 10, 2005 4:09 PM Subject: WIN98SE BOOT PROBLEM "R.L.
