Default DVD drive is not playing DVD

On my Windows 98SE computer, when I put a DVD into the D drive the little
light flickers, however it never does recognize the DVD. Do I have
something set up incorrectly? I go into My Computer and can see the DVD is
not showing up. I click on the drive letter but it keeps me doing a
"retry" that never works. Help. What is going on?
Thanks,
Nutty

Is this a data DVD or a movie DVD? Does the drive recognize CDs? Is the
drive in fact a DVD drive?

Yes, it is a DVD drive. And it doesn't recognize CDs either. I should've
stated that. Each time the yellow light flickers for probably a full
minute, but it never "takes". The CD is never recognized.

Try cleaning the drive with an audio CD cleaning disc - one made for a CD
player, not one of the fancy "computer/multimedia" cleaning discs; since
your computer is not recognizing discs you'll only be wasting your money.
If your computer is in an environment that has lots of pet dander, smoke or
dust you may want to clean it two or three times following the instructions
on the disc. Once it's cleaned, try a couple discs. If they still aren't
recognized then you may have a faulty drive that needs to be replaced.

I have had a couple reports of spyware/adware infestations interfering with
a CD or DVD drive so you may want to peek at
http://rgharper.mvps.org/cleanit.htm for some tools to scan for infections.

Been up to date on all those spyware/adware programs. No smoking here.
Dust yes. But hopefully not too much. The other CD-RW drive works fine.
I had been trying to use the Computer drive cleaner. Will have to get the
plain CD one as suggested but I fear that will not do it. Tell me, would
the light flicker if the drive were bad? I thought as long as the light
showed it was "trying" to access the CD it was not idicative of a bad drive.
Thanks,
Nutty

This is not a safe assumption. The light merely tells
you something is trying to read data on the drive. The
light cannot tell you whether it reads anything OK, or
that the drive is undamaged and working OK.
