Default Computer Switches Off on Own

Can anybody tell me how I can search my computer for
viruses without going into Windows 98. I believe I have a
virus as cannot start Windows. Cannot start in safe mode.
Is there software available that can be used in DOS so
that I can scan my hard drive from the 'C' prompt and
find out which virus I have or do I have to format my
hard drive and reload Windows 98 (which will cause me
much stress as I have no backups - yes I know, when will
I ever learn - PLONKER is tattooed on my forehead!!!).
System shutsdown before Windows starts. Any advice will
be much appreciated.

More info please. What exactly happens when you start to boot? Is there an
error message? Is the computer powering off by itself? Any screens before
shutdown?

Thanks for responding - Switch on; 1 beep; memory test;
verifying DMI pool data; Windows 98 logo; verifying DMI
pool data; Windows Start menu; straight to Safe Mode; I
then hit enter on safe mode = verifying DMI pool data;
screen goes black with different error messages each time
I go through whole process. Howevevr, I cannot pause
screen to read the individual error messages as the
system shuts down by itself too quick. One message I was
able to read = error loading gdi.exe. Another one (sorry
I could only see part of the message) read, error loading
vxd.

Hope the above gives you some pointers. I now
respectfully await your reply.

It is tough to help with such limited info. The gdi error may be being
caused by missing fonts. See this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=188094

To replace a missing or corrupt file with an original copy, you must locate
the file in the .cab files on your W98 CD or from whatever source media that
contains the file. (Note: the file may not be in a .cab file and if so,
disregard the instructions on .cabs and simply copy the file to a floppy
disk.) Using the machine you are posting with, open Explorer and select the
folder containing the .cab files. Open the Tools menu, click Find, Files and
type: *.Cab in the Named box. Type the name of the wanted file in the
Containing Text box and click Find Now. This lists the .cab file your
wanted file is located in. Double click the .cab file to see what's in it
and right click to extract the wanted file to a floppy disk.

Boot with a floppy start up disk--CDRom support is not required. If you do
not have a start up disk, make one with the Fat32ebd.exe file located on the
W98 CD: tools/mtsutil/fat32ebd.
At the A: prompt, put in the floppy containing the file you extracted.
Assuming you are replacing a .dll file named xyz, type: Copy A:\xyz.dll
C:\windows\system\xyz.dll and hit enter. Once the file is copied,
remove the floppy disk and reboot. While .dll files are filed in the system
folder, other files may be filed elsewhere so make sure you specify the
right folder.
**********

Since you don't have anything backed up, what you may want to do if you have
enough drive space is an install of Windows over the top of the existing
system from DOS. See these instructions:
http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/w98_restore.html If you have an OEM
disk, it might give you an error message about an existing system and if so,
see the info he http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/upgrade.html
*********

If all else fails, you might be able to get into the system using the
technique in the following article. If you can get in, you can back up your
data. Once that is done, wipe the drive clean and start over.

Ron

Thanks a million. Have managed to get back into system
using your instructions and have managed to back up all
that's necessary. Have re-installed Win98 and am
currently putting back all that was backed up - phew!
Yes, this has taught me a very serious lesson - backup,
backup, backup (thankfully, PLONKER has now been removed
from my forehead!).

Cheers - your advice/instructions are life savers
