I have backed up my drive several time but it doesn't work
when I want to transfer to XP Home ... how can i do this
so that I don't lose my present programs. I do my backups
to another hdd but I can't get XP to accept the tranfer?
I'm asking this in both Xp and 98SE groups. Would like to
know before I go and by software on 21st July.

You might like to use buy and use Norton Ghost ...MARVELLOUS program. You
have to read up on it very carefully, and be sure what you're doing before
using it.

To transfer files from an old computer to a new one running Windows XP use
the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. Read all about it in the Windows XP
help files.

1. You can't "transfer" your programs from 98 to XP Home except by first =
transferring the entire 98 system to the new machine and then upgrading =
to XP--and even then, it can be a messy affair, requiring apps to be =
reinstalled.=20

2. As Richard says, if all you want to do is transfer your personal =
files, program preferences, ISP and email accounts, etc., the FAST is =
the answer. It can be run from the XP CD.

3. For reading backups made of a 98 system on an XP machine, you need to =
use a backup software that is compatible with both. The included Windows =
Backup apps are pretty much restricted to use on the same version of =
Windows with which they came, and are not cross-compatible.

If you could provide more information on your setup, it would help. You =
have two machines? Describe them in detail--make/model, speed RAM, etc. =
In particular, what is the make/model of your XP machine? Also, did you =
speak correctly when you said that you wanted to transfer "programs"? =
Not just personal data and things like ISP settings, etc.? Some examples =
would help.
