W98 configmg error on W98/xp pro dual boot machine
My brother just phoned me from Bournemouth - his dual boot PC won't start.
Selecting W98 from the dual boot screen gives him "While Initializing Device CONFIGMG: Windows..." e.g. http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;q187612 but, his is not an MSI motherboard so I think this MS kb article is not applicable, and I suspect his problem is more serious. and choosing xp pro also will not start up and gives him a black screen / Safe mode gives him lots of dos text and then a black screen. ....any ideas as to what's gone bang ? regards, Richard |

W98 configmg error on W98/xp pro dual boot machine
I've just spoken to him again and, a few days ago he put his old pci128v
disk in and installed the drivers into xp pro. It booted normally to the dual boot screen several times, each time he booted to xp pro. Now, he gets to the dual boot screen - W98 yields a configmg error and xp pro goes to a dos screen with several options, he's tried safe mode, and "boot to last know good configuration, all no go. regards, Richard "RJK" wrote in message ... W98 configmg error on W98/xp pro dual boot machine
http://search.support.microsoft.com/...SD=GN&LN=EN-US MSKB
Search "configmg"; Windows 98; Exact Phrase; Full Text; produces this additional article... http://support.microsoft.com/default...66&Product=w98 Error Message: Initializing Device IOS Windows Protection Error (263466) - When you start your computer, you may receive the following error message: Initializing Device IOS: Windows Protection Error When you try to restart your computer in Safe mode, you may receive the same error message. I don't know much about dual boot. If a virus is involved, I guess both OS could be affected. Perhaps instead of the above... (1) Run a virus check, especially for a boot virus. (2) Run the "XP Repair" I have heard (but know nothing) of. I THINK they said... (a) Boot the XP disk. (b) Choose the "Repair" option. -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "RJK" wrote in message ... | My brother just phoned me from Bournemouth - his dual boot PC won't start. | | Selecting W98 from the dual boot screen gives him "While Initializing Device | CONFIGMG: Windows..." | e.g. http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;q187612 but, | his is not an MSI motherboard so I think this MS kb article is not | applicable, and I suspect his problem is more serious. | | and choosing xp pro also will not start up and gives him a black screen / | Safe mode gives him lots of dos text and then a black screen. | | ...any ideas as to what's gone bang ? | | regards, Richard | | |

W98 configmg error on W98/xp pro dual boot machine
Thanx PCR, I spotted a few web pages talking about viruses that can have
this effect. I shan't know a great deal more until I get my hands on his PC. I think I'll have a go at a repair install or over-install if that's possible with his version of xp pro. I've spotted a few things to look out for e.g. after a system is made dual boot, (W98 is installed 1st then xp pro goes in - is the typical method), it's XP that set's up and handles the dual boot, bootsect.dos is how xp "alters" W98 boot up when selected from the dual boot screen ...options contained in boot.ini Then there's ntldr and ntdectect.com to look out from. Unless I've misread some web pages fdisk /mbr can be used from XP and should preserve the dual boot configuration. fdisk /mbr from W98 dos would leave the system not knowing anything about dual boot and xp pro on drive d: I'll be having a cautious "tinker" around with it, when I get to go to Bournemouth to visit my brother in four or five days. :-) regards, Richard "RJK" wrote in message ... W98 configmg error on W98/xp pro dual boot machine
I'm not all that informed :-)
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/xpfaq.html is providing a few tidbits of information about what lives where on dual boot. I have the feeling that it will be quicker to wipe his machine and reinstall from scratch, though I would like to locate the problem that's stopping him booting up W98se or xp pro on his dual boot pc. I suspect that if it's not a virus, a sector or few ...has failed and he's got some critical system files that are damaged. So it may be best to run his hd manufacturers hd utility to verify the disk and mark out dodgy clusters, ...then ...for £33 you can get a new hd now so perhaps we'll put one in. To prevent this happening again perhaps I'll put him in a 2nd hd and make him a boot cd with Norton Ghost etc. regards, Richard "PCR" wrote in message ... You are welcome. Actually, you are more informed than I am, if all you said here is true, about bootsect.dos & all. My final advice is to be sure you have put on your tinfoil hat, before getting within 5 feet of that XP. And keep this NG informed, even if from a hospital bed! -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "RJK" wrote in message ... | Thanx PCR, I spotted a few web pages talking about viruses that can have | this effect. W98 configmg error on W98/xp pro dual boot machine
You seem to have a plan. Putting myself at risk of XP-radiation burn, I
clicked that XP FAQs URL of yours-- & did NOT see a "Repair" option. Perhaps something in the Recovery Console will do what you need done, although I don't see how it could affect the Win98 side. Well, keep us informed. I will begin work on your obituary. Go to Bootdisk.com and get a XP boot disk or see if you can copy the =
