can't change x2 to x1 error message suggestions?
can't change x2 to x1
My brother called for advice. Because he couldn't access internet (AOL) he decided to reinstall Window ME. Found cabinet files in c:\windows\options\cab. double clicked on setup. watched all the reinstall messages for about an hour. when computer rebooted itself the message was can't change x2 to x1. I told him to try delete key on reboot -- bios -- bus speed. unable to change his bios. told him to try safe mode. Safe mode gave same message -- can't change x2 to x1 then computer freezes. Because ME he does not have boot in MS-DOS. He ordered recover disc but instructions say he will loose all data. Any suggestions? |

Your %1/%2 error is caused usually by Norton LiveUpdate, corrupting the
System Restore archive - although there are other possible causes. Do a Search for the file WININIT.INI - if you find it, then rename it to WININIT.JNK, and reboot - your problem should be gone. If you don't find it, then try this - Start|Run - enter SCANREG /FIX into the dialog box, and click OK - windows will reboot - see if that fixes it. If not, then open Windows Explorer - check in Folder Properties that you are able to view Hidden and System files (two settings), then Search on your PC for files named '_RESTORE' (without the quotes) - you should find the C:\_RESTORE folder - r-click on it, and select Properties. How many files/folders are there? If it's around 64 thousand, then LiveUpdate has been up to its tricks again, and you'll have to completely remove the folder from DOS - use the following method, which seems to be the easiest at present. Reboot to DOS using your Startup disk enter the following commands at the A:\ prompt. ATTRIB -R -H -S C:\_RESTORE REN C:\_RESTORE OLDREST remove the floppy, and reboot to normal windows. - your error should be gone, and you should now have a new, single restore point. Go to Windows Explorer, and delete the C:\OLDREST folder HTH -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "idmonnnn" wrote in message ... can't change x2 to x1 My brother called for advice. Thanks for helping. If it doesn't work you are not responsible. If it does
work I will contribute to your favorite charity. I'll let you know when he tries it. I programmed it into batch file for him. Thanks again |

Hmmm - it's 35 years since I studied Latin.....

ADHOC == till now
FRATER == brother MEUS == my CONSILIA == suggestions TUI == your NON == not ADPARABAT== attempted Up to now my brother has not attempted your suggestions. INTERIM == meantime QUOD == what EST == is BENEFACTOR == he who confers a favor CHARITATIS == charitable PRINCEPS == foremost TUI== of you In the meantime what is your favorite charity? Parenthetically, since my last post he did try your suggestions, and the result was dramatic. Although you are not really into Latin as I had suspected, your computer advice was right on target. And he conveys to you his many thanks. |

As to favourite charity - since I'm in the UK, and you would appear to be in the US, there's little chance that my charities would be available for your donations (if any - it's not compulsory!) - so please pick a local cat-protection charity of some kind.... or an African famine-relief one. Good luck to both you and your brother. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's |
