I am running Windows ME 4.9.3000 Build 3000 on a:

Gateway Select 950

I reinstalled Windows ME and that changed my IE back to 5.5.4134.0100.
I am trying to upgrade that Internet Explorer to 6.0 and the only
thing I can get is the SP-1 Service Pack.

When I try to install this I get the following message:

"Setup was unable to install all the components. Please close all
applications and try running Setup again."

When I try to run it again I get the message:

"A previous installation has pending work requiring a reboot. You need
to restart your computer to complete that installation before running
Internet Explorer Setup. Setup will now close."

I really would like to get to IE 6. How can I do that?

Not as bad as it might be
What you have now is 'Version Soup' - where you have some files that are
relevant to IE5.5, and some that are relevant to IE6.

Look here for advice on how to resolve the situation - post back BEFORE
doing anything if you're uncertain, or have any questions.

The advice was right on the money and I was able to get my IE 6 up and
running just great. http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/ReInIE.htm

There was one problem in the instructions: Under "Cleaning Up, and
Correcting I was not able to find and install the 329115 Patch. I am
still working on that.

Thank you, and all the others who answered my post, very much for your
help. It is encouraging to find a place to go for good help.

Ah - that may have been superseded by another patch.....
download and run Belarc Advisor (www.belarc.com)
see what it reports about your IE patches.
Then visit Windows Update, and download and install ALL the critical patches
(just a couple at a time, with reboots in between batches), and re-run
Belarc
See what the report says then.

I believe the files in Q329115 have been superseded by installing IE6-SP1:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329115#Win9x

Crypt32.dll v5.131.2600.2162
Cryptdlg.dll v5.0.1558.6072

If Dave's installed version of these two files are later than the above, all
should be well IMHO.

Shouldn't be that - it was IE6SP1 I installed from the Security CD when
testing (unless they have an updated SP1 on download now?)

I'll try it over the weekend and see what I can see - my test box has a
fresh install of ME on it for me to play with.
