Well, slight progress. Firstly got rid of XP on PC2 and installed W98SE
(because I can find things in win 98).
Uninstalled and re-installed ICS. Still no luck.
Renamed PC2 the same as PC1 to see if I would get an error message - I
didn't.
Installed IPX and NETBEUI on PC2.
On re-boot of PC2 got error message that PC was named the same as another PC
on the network (first time I've been pleased to see an error messageg)
Ran NET DIAG first with IPX but with no luck.
Ran NET DIAG with NETBEUI and got communication between the two PCs.
Now I understood that ICS would not work with NETBEUI on the client PC.
Have I got this wrong?
And now I know the hardware is working what should I try next?
Oh and I did look at both the web sites suggested by Stace and Haggis and
tried all the suggestions in there before I got rid of XP for 98.

Thanks for the help so far guys.

Hey Zippy,
You had any luck getting connected. I'm trying right now to get an XP and 98
SE machine to talk without the internet in the way with just a crossover
cable but haven't had any luck.
Wondering if you found out anything that might help me. My dog doesn't even
want to look at me anymore cuz I've spent so much time on this.

Dan,

Unfortunately not.

I think I've tried every suggestion at every networking site I can find
(with the exception of getting a router but even that I'm going to try in
the next few days with a borrowed router).

I can get the two PCs talking together using the NETBEUI protocol but not
TCP/IP as neither PC will even ping the other although pinging 127.0.0.1
works on both PCs individually. The client PC gets the correct IP address
(192.168.0.2) from the host mind you

I'd like to get it working with just the crossover cable because I don't
want to buy a router (assuming that method works) because I hate spending
money that I don't need to spend. If I can get it going I'll try XP on the
second PC again but that may be some time coming the way things are at the
moment :-)

Good luck with your attempts and if you do get it going I'd love to know
what you did!!

Yep. Been to both of those. The bit where it says what it should look like
when ICS is installed is exactly what I see but still no joy so maybe
something else is causing the problem - but I can't work out what. However
I've a suspicion that the onboard NIC on PC1 may be the cause of the problem
as although it appears ok in the device manager and in the network
properties, it doesn't appear when I do a IPCONFIG /ALL command. I'm sure
it must be a clue but I can't work out what it's telling me :-(.
