I would press the F8 key at start-up to bring up the boot
menu and then choose to boot into Safe mode. When in that mode, try running a utility such as Defrag. If there are no problems, then it's probably a software/driver issue. Updating all of the device drivers might help. Entering msconfig in the Start = Run box and disabling all of the start-up programs and then running the PC to find out if one of them is responsible might help. If the PC works with the start-up programs disabled, re-enable them one at a time to find the culprit. If you did anything to the PC before this started happening, try reversing whatever it was. But if the same problems occur in Safe mode, then its probably faulty hardware such as an overheating processor (open the case and make sure its cooling unit is working properly) bad RAM, a faulty power supply unit. There are some links to free hardware-testing utilities he http://www.pcbuyerbeware.co.uk/Links.htm#diagnostics Eric, http://www.pcbuyerbeware.co.uk/ http://www.sharedbirthday.co.uk/ -----Original Message----- the hardware conflict troubleshooter does not work from the help menu or the device manager anymore. i'm having major probs, drivers, IDE to bus memory hang ups, freezes etc. anyone have any idea? searched MS all night nuttin there. help! . |

A couple of Windows updates broke the Help troubleshooters.
There are two different fixes, depending on the Windows updates you have installed. The original fix for the older update was this: First, click Start Settings Folder Options View tab, and click to enable "Show All Files" and click OK. Click Start Find File or Folders, and search the C:\ drive for a file named Tshoot.inf...it should be found in the \Windows\Inf folder. Right-click Tshoot.inf and click Install on the menu that appears. If the latest cumulative patch for Internet Explorer is installed, there is only a workaround. See he http://home.comcast.net/~bascon58/98Help.htm and http://mvps.org/PracticallyNerded/SoftFixes.htm -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "eric" wrote in message ... the hardware conflict troubleshooter does not work from the help menu or the device manager anymore. i'm having major probs, drivers, IDE to bus memory hang ups, freezes etc. anyone have any idea? searched MS all night nuttin there. help! |
