Yes, as long as both drives are using the same file system,
which would have to be FAT32. If you are using the NTFS file system in XP, it cannot read a FAT32 drive. If both drives have FAT32, you can access the other drive in Windows Explorer or via My Computer. Actually WinXP with NTFS has no problems in reading FAT32 files. In
fact, WinXP can copy a file from an NTFS partition to a FAT32 partition and Win98 in the FAT32 partition can read the file. However, Win98 can't even see an NTFS partition. hawk Eric wrote: Yes, as long as both drives are using the same file system, which would have to be FAT32. WinXP can handle any combination of NTFS and FAT partitions. Installing your old drive into your newer XP machine should work just fine. -- Tim Slattery MS MVP(DTS) |

Yes that will work. That would be how I would do it.
XP can see any "fat" format. But 98 can not see a NTFS. That is why dual boot may be frustrating. XP can beat-up 98SE but 98 will not be able to even see where the blows are coming from. Once you get the needed files transfered you can clean and leave the old drive as slave. If you want. Leave it fat32. -----Original Message----- I have an old pc running win 98 with a few files on it I would like to retrieve onto a newer pc with win xp home. if i slave the old hard drive onto the new pc can i copy the old file to the new pc and be able to read/use them on the new pc? . |
