Default Explorer Caused and invalid page fault in module explorer.exe

I was using my machine yesterday and noticed that all of a sudden I could not
use the folders by double clicking. Thinking the machine needed a reboot I
restarted the machine however when the machine restared it asked me to
reinsert my name and also the Product Key which I did.

The machine then booted up and gets to my background where the folliwing
message appears in an explorer dialogue box:

" This program has performed and illegal operation and will be shut down
....." when I click on details the following comes up "Explorer Caused and
invalid page fault in module explorer.exe"

I have tried the following:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=191609 (no explorer.exe file found in root)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=296211 (didnt fix the problem)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=293174 (extracted browseui.dll tried
opeing progman but no items in install/uninstall view)

Could you please provide further assistance

It seems probable that your Windows installation has been damaged. One
issue is what caused the damage. If the computer is as old as Win98,
the harddisk may have developed bad spots. Thus, I suggest that you
first scan your harddisk for errors. The Ultimate Boot Disk will do a
number of things including scanning your hard drive for errors. It is
free at:

http://www.startdisk.com/Web1/ubd/ubd.htm

Once you have checked your harddisk (and possibly have locked out bad
places), you should try reinstalling Windows on top of the current
installation. This may not solve the problem, but if it does, your
will save yourself some work.

If reinstalling on top of the current installation does not correct
the problem, then I would install Windows into a new, empty folder:
See

How to Install Windows 98 to a New Folder [193902]
http://support.microsoft.com/support...s/193/9/02.asp

Information about reinstalling is also on www.windowsreinstall.com.

you stated "(extracted browseui.dll tried opeing progman but no items in
install/uninstall view)" after getting the program manager up, you did run
the ADD/REMOVE program correctly I take it...?

I just uninstalled & re-installed Internet Explorer and Internet Tools

I too have exactly the same problem! Happened 3 days ago. I have tried

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=191609 (no explorer.exe file found in
root)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=293174 (no items in install/uninstall view either)

I don't have any windows 98 discs as this is a computer borrowed from a
friend. Anyway I can fix this without re-installing?

Can I scan the hard disk by buying something off the shelf?
