You shouldn't unknowingly have ANY .rar files on your PC.

Sound like virus infected attachments,
resulting from the mass-mailing worm Beagle.
Or perhaps KLEZ.

Run a Google search for
RAR VIRUS
and then browse the hits to see if
you match any of the scenarios described.

Your anti-virus system is working properly, I hope.

Try the harmless EICAR anti-virus test at

http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm

If you click on ANY of the 4 links on the bottom of that page,
all of which point to a harmless industry-standard virus-scanner test file,
and your virus scanner doesn't immediately activate
BEFORE the file download begins, then your computer is defenseless.

The .rar extension is as Glen mentions, created by either WinRAR (Windows GUI) or
RAR (Command line). If you do not have or never had either, and you haven't dl'd any
..rar files, then you may want to look into Hugh's suggestion. If you do have either
and you have it set as the default Zip app, then that's what you will see, .rar
files. Although WinZip can not open/create .rar files, WinRAR and RAR can open/create
..zip files.
Other non-archived files they can work with a
CAB, ARJ, LZH, TAR, GZ, ACE, UUE, BZ2, JAR, ISO
