Default CDROM Drive

Have a friend who operates under Win 98. I tried to give
him some assistance with printer, etc. and came across
this problem, we can't open his disk drive to change
CDROM's, and answer we get back is basically 'D Drive is
not recognizable or words to that effect'.

There is no pinhole to open it, the PC is fairly old, it
is a HP and probably 6 years old.

Question is, how can we get the PC to recognize the drive
and how can we open it.

We never did solve his printing problem, seems he runs
out of ink after a few passes. Could be his ink suppliers
I am thinking. And the printer is old also, a Lexmark
that is not now supported. Should we remove this from the
system and re-install it? He also can't find his CDROM
where the printer was installed. Can we download from
Lexmark and use that driver exe file to re-install?

Thanks in advance.

If the CD-ROM is not bad turn off the computer. Then take
off the cover of the PC.AND BEWARE OF STATIC ELECTRISITY
it can fry your pc.So ground your self in the back of
your pc(the non panted part) and remove the IDE cable
from the CD-ROM Drive and leave the Power cable hookt up.
If you don't know what is what the power cables wires
have the color RED,BLACK,BLACK,YELLOW. Turn ON the PC and
Press EJECT. If it still doesent work then get a NEW CD-
ROM. You can get one At:http://www.tigerdirect.com/

Good luck hope it works out for you.
