Itunes not compatible
I just got an ipod and found out that Windows ME is not compatible with
itunes. Is it worth the $100 to upgrade to Windows XP or should I just get a new computer? I mostly use my pc for e-mail and storage of pictures, old files, etc. Any advice is greatly appreciated! |

Unless the computer is older than Athlon / Pentium4, I would probably add XP in a dual boot environment. If your C: hard drive (or C: partition) is getting old (more than 3 years old, smaller than 20 GB) get a recent model "PATA" / ATA drive with the "box software." Get a "boxed drive" as opposed to a "Bare drive" unless you Partition Magic 7 or equivalent. "Boxed", you may remember, give you the software you need to copy the system on the old drive to the new one AND Dual Boot. THEN install XP in a D: partition for dual booting. Partition Magic (at least version 7) is a tool you can use to set up dual booting and/or copy partitions, merge partitions also. PATA drives are just a little bit hard to find now but I was just on Outpost.com and saw Seagate 320GB Ultra DMA/100 16MB Buffer Retail Hard Drive - ST30204N1A1A-RK for $110. The warranty on that Seagate sounds pretty good. OK, bear with me (chick and computer) - here are the specs:
Pentium 3 @ 930 MHz 383MB memory 2 hard drives (60 & 20 GB) Windows ME version 4.90.3000 MS DOS version 8.00A I think you may have only needed the first 3 bits of info or maybe something else but that's what I found. Thanks for the replies! "Alias" wrote: Amzonie wrote: I just got an ipod and found out that Windows ME is not compatible with itunes. It may not be quite optimal but XP does run ok on a P3 600MHz with 128MB memory so that should be decent. If money is tight, just buying XP for that will be fine. You can get the upgrade version for around $90-$100USD. If you have money to spare, I'd still recommend getting a new PC. You can find a decent one with XP and a flat panel monitor for around $500-$600USD. I'm having that same issue myself, having to get XP to run iTunes because iPods don't like Windows ME. My Sony MP3 player does everything the iPod does and more for less money and WinME does recognize it.. |

It allows you to copy things FROM the iPod TO your pc. iTunes doesn't permit that. |

I mostly use my pc for e-mail and storage of pictures, old files, etc. Any advice is greatly appreciated! I am an IT professional and I don't believe it is ever worth it to upgrade ME or anything else to XP. Desktops have come down so much in price that it makes no sense. Right now I can go to Dell Small Business and get a new Vostro Minitower running XP home with a 19" widescreen monitor for $399. After you're through with tax, etc. that might cost you $475. You'd have a year warranty, a DVD/RW, 160GB sata hard drive and a duel pentium processor. If you keep an eye out you can find cheap vista towers for as little as $250. (There was one at office depot last week.) If you invest $100 to update ME you've still got an old computer that might die at any time. And it can be a royal pain and take a huge amount of time to upgrade. Save your time and money and get a new one. Good luck, Al |

Of course if you have $100 to spare and you don't have $400+ it may be a
good idea to upgrade to XP, since you can still buy a cheaper new system with no OS, but for most people yes it is probably a good idea to wait for the extra $300-$400 to get a whole new system if you'd have it anytime soon or just like getting package systems that are already ready to go. The other bonus to waiting for a new system to get the new OS is the new system is likely to be 64 bit and the old system is likely 32 bit. While the 64 bit PC should run the 32 bit OS, it should look even better with a 64 bit OS. The longer you hold out on getting a new PC, the better the PC you can get for the money. If you have the money, this does seem like a good time to buy. "base16hex" wrote in message news GUEST wrote: I just got an ipod and found out that Windows ME is not compatible with itunes.
