Default Little Things Mean A Lot (Of Hassle)

No reason for posting this, except perhaps to ease the troubled minds of
those of you struggling with shutdown and restart problems.

I started having these problems (specifically with 'Restart') just over
three years ago. I already had the DFS patch installed, and I tried just
about every other method of diagnosing and circumventing the confounded
thing - all to no avail.

Last week, I bought a new modem. My old one (a Dynamode A360) was on the
way out, so I replaced it with a brand-new Thomson SpeedTouch. I'd had
the Dynamode installed for...just over three years.

Since uninstalling the AmecSA software for the Dynamode, and installing
the Thomson software, this ole PC boots to desktop faster, shuts down
*much* faster, and (so far, so good) will do a shutdown and restart
without any problem.

So there you are. The trouble is, of course, that you'd need to go
through a few dozen laps of uninstalling stuff to be able to find what
might be causing the problem for *you*. Unless by chance you had to
replace your modem... :-)

FWIW, I notice that this is a USB modem so it could be more of a USB
issue than a modem issue.

Hmmm....Amecsa.cpl is a control panel for an ADSL modem.....

'Assa right, boss! :-)

FWIW, I saw lots of shutdown problems with BellSouth ADSL service here.
Once we swiched to cable internet and got rid of the DSL modem, the
shutdown troubles disappeared.

Well, I've gone from an ADSL USB modem to...an ADSL USB modem.

In all likelihood, just *one* file could have been making the
difference. The trick, of course, is being able to track down *which*
file...and terminating it with extreme prejudice.

This sort of thing is mentioned in MVP Jim Eshelman's Windows Shutdown
Troubleshooter:
http://aumha.org/win4/a/shutdown.htm

Funny, never saw it there - must read things more intently in future.

There was a recent thread where someone introduced shutdown problems
by connecting the USB port on his monitor. I'd say that was a case of
poor USB implementation, not necessarily a problem with the monitor
itself. On the OS side, the MSKB has several patches for errant USB
behaviour, so I guess blame is hard to narrow down. I'd be interested
to know if the Dynamode A360 has similar issues in Win XP. Anyway
you've solved your problem. Congratulations.

I doubt if the monitor added any USB logic at all - more likely it's
just a convenient place to mount a generic USB hub.

The problems are more likely related to USB power requirements, or
other issues that may arise when "too many" hubs etc. are interposed
between a USB device and the host system.

I would not use a "USB modem" for ADSL, ever. I'd insist on a NAT
router, preferably cabled (Ethernet) rather than WiFi.

With a real router, there is no need for any "special" software or
drivers at all. The only thing the PC has to drive and understand, is
the network card. Everything else is just a matter of parameters.

However, even real routers often come with "driver disks", especially
if provided by an ISP who wishes to make it "easy" so as to avoid
support calls. At best, this software may do nothing more than
provide a smooth front-end to entering parameters into the router.

At worst, the software may force the router to act as a dumb Bridge,
disabling the NAT routing protection you'd have expected from a
router. Then the software may hang around in the System Tray as yet
another underfootware cause of problems. It may even seek to limit
use of the router to the ISP that provided it "free".

Ethernet cards are cheap.
