Default Left Pane Icon Missing

Hello,

I have a very simple problem. I've searched the web but I couldn't find an
answer.
You know in Windows 98, when you select a folder (and if "View as Web Page"
is selected) you get informantion about the folder etc. On the left pane it
says "Select an item to view it description". Right above that it says My
Computer, and above that there should be an icon of My Computer (which I'm
missing).

For example, when I open "My Computer", a window appears and on the left
pane you also see a icon (picture) of My Computer. That icon is missing. And
instead of the icon, there is a flash object ( I think it's a flash object,
cause it has a triangle, circle and a square on it) that usually appears on
shockwave flash related web sites.

Now what is this doing here ? Where's the icon on the left pane? How do I
fix it?

Regards,

Mike

First, try this:

Click StartRun, type:

REGSVR32 THUMBVW.DLL

click OK.

Click StartRun, type:

REGSVR32 WEBVW.DLL

click OK.

Thanks for the reply, but it didn't work.

I also tried extracting the mycomp.htt file, but that didn't work either.
How do I fix this simple thing?

The same thing happens with Printer, Control Panel etc. Not just My Computer.
What is responsible for the viewing of that icon in the left pane, in win98.
And why is there a flash object.

Regards,

Mike

Forgot to mention in my previous post.
When I did Start-Run:
REGSVR32 THUMBVW.DLL
REGSVR32 WEBVW.DLL

a message box appeared saying that it succeeded. But this didn't fix my
problem.

Just thought I should clarify that.

Regards,

Mike

Where do you see a Flash object?

I am trying to remember details about this issue, but since I do not ever use View
As Web Page in Win98, this is not something that stayed in my memory.

IIRC, the .htt files and the .css file in the Windows\Web folder are responsible for
calling the icon for that view. The icon that appears is the icon that is described
in the Registry for each of those items....My Computer, Control Panel, and so forth.
If you use a theme, the icon will be the one used by that theme. (For example, if
you use the Space theme, My Computer on your desktop will be a pic of earth from
space, and that is also what will be displayed in Web View for the My Computer
window).

Do the icons for those items (My Computer, Control Panel, etc.) appear correctly on
your Desktop, or elsewhere, such as the Control Panel icon in My Computer?

Do you have any third-party themes or folder customizations installed?

Have you tried opening the folders in question, clicking View menu Customize,
select Remove Customization, and following the prompts?

Thanks for your reply Glee.

The flash object (it contains a triangle, circle, square) appears right
where there should be the icon (which is above the text My Computer, or
Control Panel (which is above "Select an item to view its description")).

The items I described (My Computer) do appear on the desktop and the other
(Control Panel etc) does appear in My Computer. And as you said with changing
desktop themes the icon in (My Computer, Control Panel, etc.) changes as
well. I changed the desktop theme, but since their is no image, I wouldn't
see a difference (regarding the icon).

I don't have third-party themes or folder customizations installed. I
haven't customized any folders, but I did check that. They can't be
customized on their own anyway right.

I appreciate your input and look forward to your reply.

Regards,

Mike

Have you tried letting Tweak UI repair your icons?

That's not a Flash Object, that's merely the generic icon that is displayed when an
image is called but not found.

? Folders can be customised using the option on the folder's View menu, as well as
in Windows explorer. However, I don't think that customisation includes the icon in
the corner.

I appreciate your input and look forward to your reply.

As I said, since I do not use View as Web Page at all, I don't have a lot to
suggest. You might try replacing all the .htt files in the Windows\Web folder with
fresh copies extracted from the .cab files on the Win98 CD.

I don't have a lot of time to investigate this right now, but will ask some of the
old hands formerly from this group in years past, and see if anyone knows
definitively.
