Background Wallpaper During Startup
I have a situation that is annoying me, but is not
critical. During startup, a background wallpaper is displayed that is out of my control. When the computer finishes booting up, the background wallpaper that I selected is properly displayed. How can I control the background wallpaper that is displayed during power-up? It is really annoying me, because it is a picture of Michael Jackson that my daughter put on the PC and now I can't get rid of it. thanks, Bill Kosanda |

I am not sure precisely *when* you are actually seeing this 'Background
Wallpaper' AND I am assuming that it is replacing the WinMe Splash screen and if so, this might point you in the right direction:- The WinMe startup 'splash' screen is contained in the IO.SYS file. (A hidden/system file, located in root of the C drive - C:\IO.SYS). You may need to set Logo=0 in the MSDOS.sys file for the splash screens to be suppressed. If that (temporarily) suppresses it, the original IO.SYS file may have been 'highjacked' However, there is also the WinMe splash itself, called SULOGO.SYS in WIN_19.CAB which is not *normally* installed. If this file is installed, the 'splash' will be extracted from this file rather than the IO.SYS file. So *maybe* SULOGO.SYS (if present) contains Michael Jackson. (NB - The SULOGO.SYS file allows OEM's etc., to modify it and substitute their own 'splash' instead of MS and if this (modified) file is installed, the 'splash' will be extracted from this file rather than the IO.SYS file.) The shut down 'splash' - the orange text on a black background 'It's now safe to turn off your computer" message is contained in LOGOS.SYS in your Windows folder. A fresh 'original' copy of the file can be found and extracted from the NET4.CAB folder on your WinMe CD using the extract utility in msconfig.exe. Background Wallpaper During Startup
Thanks, I looked over this stuff and from what I can tell,
the Windows Millenium splash screen is appearing correctly. The "Michael Jackson" splash screen comes up after the Windows ME splash screen and remains on the screen for the rest of the boot-up time, until it is replaced with my selected background photo at the end of boot up. I also noted that the properties I select for my desired background photo affect the Michael Jackson splash. These are the stretch and tile selections on the Control Panel under Display/Background. I am a little reluctant to start changing some of the entries in MSDOS.SYS, as I think the Windows ME splash screen is working properly, it is just getting replaced by another "highjacker". I beleive I could turn off the Windows ME splash, but it would not have an effect on the MJ picture (unless you think this might really fix the problem). Note that when MJ's picture is on the screen, there are never any other icons or start bar, etc. Those all come up when my selected background photo is displayed. FWIW - I have heard of this issue before but never did find out the cause -
or cure!! I think that the 'splash' in that particular case was somewhat more offensive than Jackson. My only suggestions are that you get a decent graphics viewer (e.g. Irfanview - freeware from http://www.irfanview.com ) and have look at all your graphics files including screensavers, bitmaps, etc., to try to locate the Jackson splash so that you can delete it. Perhaps someone else who's had this particular of problem may be able to jump in here with a solution. Good luck Mart "Bill K" wrote in message ... Background Wallpaper During Startup
Hi Bill!
I'd finish to read your mail with Mart, and maybe I can help. I'd the same problem you're referring. I deal with it lyke this: -Browse anyplace in the net where there is maybe nice pictures or wallpapers you like (I went to NASA.com). -After you choose one, right-click on it and from the pop- up menu choose "set as wallpaper". THIS WILL PUT THE CHOOSEN PICTURE IN YOUR DESKTOP. -Now: a) If you lyke the picture, let it be and THIS IS ALSO WHAT YOU'LL SEE WHEN YOU BOOT UP AND AT THE END OF IT. b) If you insist in a specific image you have\like, reboot after "set as wallpaper" (of course after closing your applications) and then choose by right-clicking on the desktop...display... your wallpaper\image. THIS WILL CHANGE THE WALLPAPER IN DESKTOP, BUT WHEN YOU BOOT AGAIN YOU WILL SEE THE PICTURE YOU CHOOSE IN THE NET AND AT THE END OF IT, YOUR CHOOSEN WALLPAPER. I think it is related to "Active Desktop". Note: In your case it was Michael Jackson, in mine it was a "very Erotic picture" and my little son was asking me about it !!! I didn't let it happen more than once !!! Good luck!!! Ikra |

Just a thought - try booting to Safe Mode, ESCaping out of any login
prompt - is that the offending wallpaper/background? if so, just change the wallpaper/background there and it should be gone on a normal boot also -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2004, Win9x) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's or http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/f.../Mar27pmvp.asp "Mart" wrote in message ... Background Wallpaper During Startup
Thank you Ikra!
That fixed my problem. At least now I understand how to control this phenomenon. I went on the internet with IE and right clicked on a suitable image and chose to set the image as wallpaper. It replaced the image of Michael Jackson I was trying to get rid of during the PC boot up process. I beleive you are correct, it has something to do with the "Active Desktop" Apparently during the boot up there is no Active Desktop and the wallpaper goes back to what ever was selected through the previous Set As Wallpaper command. Somehow executing the Set As Wallpaper command is not the same as changing the background picture through the control panel. Not sure I understand the reason, but at least I have control of it now. thanks, Bill -----Original Message----- Hi Bill! I'd finish to read your mail with Mart, and maybe I can help.
