Default VMM32 folder empty. Can't change monitor settings.

Hello,
I recently had to reinstall windows 98 on an older machine. After doing
so, my monitor was set to 16 Colors and the lowest possible screen
resolution. Upon some investigation, I noticed that the VMM32 folder is
empty in the windows folder. I updated the drivers for the monitor and
the card. Are these two observations linked? Are my monitor problems a
product of the empty VMM32 folder?

The VMM32 folder should be empty - don't worry about it

Reboot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL Display Adapters
Remove ALL Monitors
Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall the required drivers -
hopefully curing your problem.
