Install OS ?'s
I'm trying to install W98 on a very old and slow puter
with a Pentium (r) processor. I didn't realize how long it was going to take. I originally had 95 on it. I had to re-format, and tried to re-install 95 on it. However, I learned that two of the 13 floppy installation disks were damaged. So, I'm trying to install 98. After about 8 hours of installing files (about 80% done), the hurricane here in Florida decided to relieve me of my power, and my install was interrupted. This happened twice!!! What I was wondering was: can I take the HD out and install it into another faster machine, install 98 onto the drive, take it back out, and replace into my slower machine? Also, when I insert this drive into my faster machine, can I put it in as a slave to the master, and still be able to successfully install 98 on it, and put it back in slow machine, and everything work? |

A driver file is built during setup so it is a crap shoot on whether or not
the system would work correctly once you put the drive in the older PC. There is no reason why an install should take 8 hours on a Pentium machine--something is drastically wrong. I installed W98 on a P133 with 32 mb of ram in less than an hour. Tell us how you are going about installing the system, what the specs are, type of PC, etc. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "DRIFT-O-MATIC" wrote in message ... -----Original Message----- A driver file is built during setup so it is a crap shoot on whether or not the system would work correctly once you put the drive in the older PC. Tell us how you are going about installing the system, what the specs are, type of PC, etc. I agree, it should not take this long. I started the process of setup yesterday, when our power came back on. It's just now setting up hardware and finalizing settings. That started about a half hour ago, and it's still not done! The machine has a Pentium (r) processor. 128 MB ram. I'm not sure what the processor speed is; but it's never been this slow before. I can't remember what I did in the BIOS. I was trying all kinds of stuff there when I was having trouble with it booting up a start up disk. I think I selected "failsafe" at one time. Would that cause this problem? The proceedure I used to setup (as far as I can remember): Put a W98 Startup Disk in floppy. Turn machine on. Typed fdisk at A:\ prompt. Deleted primary DOS partition. Created new primary partition. I restarted machine. Typed format c:/s at A:\. It transfered files. Reboot. A:\ setup. Then the whole slow process began. As I type this, it's still setting up hardware and finalizing settings (been almost an hour). I also noticed that the mouse won't work, either. What do you think? |

..........OK, about 16 hours of time went by since I started the installation, and it finally finished. Geeeeeeeeez, what a task that was. Everything seems to be alright. It's still as slow as it always was with WIN95 on it. I just can't figure why it took so long to install. Anyone have any ideas? Oh, well. It's working now. I guess that's all that matters now. |

Control panel, system, performance tab--is there any mention of MSDOS
compatibility? -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "DRIFT-O-MATIC" wrote in message ... .........OK, about 16 hours of time went by since I started the installation, and it finally finished.
