Default Help: WinMe is now Mac OS

I reinstalled WinMe. I went to the Windows Update site to pick up the
updates. The first one I downloaded and installed was IE6 SP1. The Windows
Update site now thinks I'm a Mac OS and redirects me to the Windows site for
Mac OS.

What is the fix?

I have reinstalled WinMe in the past, many years ago, without having this
problem.

Try downloading and installing the following update for IE6, then try
the Windows Update site again.

Internet Explorer 6 Security Patch for Windows 98, NT 4.0, and Me:
VBScript
Handling Can Allow Web Pages to Read Local Files

Post the results back here.

Good luck

Thank you for your help.

The patch did NOT work. A message box stated it did install successfully.

The Windows Update site refers me Office of Mac page.

Scott ...

Is this a clean reinstall of Win ME [format of the HardDrive, reinstall
WinMe] or an over the top reinstall [remove the WMP .dll and IE6, then
reinstall WinME on top] ?
Since the issue appeared with the installation of IE6 SP1, could you
please uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs, restart the system, and
revisit Windows Update to see if the OS is detected correctly this
time ? If Win ME is correctly detected, strongly suggest you first
install the update that resolves an issue with System Resto

Checkpoints that you create after September 8, 2001 do not restore your
computer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290700

IF the OS is still detected correctly, download and install
Windows Script 5.6 for Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition, and
Windows NT 4.0 next, please :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Restart the system after it's install and revisit Windows Update once
more, please. Is the OS still correctly detected ?

NOTE: I just tried to access Windows Update using a VPC install of 98SE.
If I clicked the Windows Update link on the Start Menu the site was
accessible.
If I opened IE and then clicked Tools, Windows Update, the system
received the " Thank you for your interest in Windows Update ... blah
blah " and the Mac OS notice.

Try accessing Windows Update from the Start Menu link, Scott. What happens ?

OK, after more testing it's down to a bad Cookie, TIF, or the firewall.
I disabled the installed firewall and WU loaded. BUT, if I did that
after visiting WU then the message appeared again.
So, close IE and temp disable the installed firewall.
Open Internet Options in the Control Panel.
Click the Delete Cookies button
Click the Delete Files button. Put a check in the 'Delete all offline
content' box. Click OK.

Now click the Windows Update link on the Start Menu or, open IE, click
Tools, Windows Update.

Did that resolve the issue ?

Mow,

I also see the "this site is for users of Windows Systems, etc" when
accessing the site from Start | Windows Update on a Win Me system running
in VPC. It looks as if the WU site is having problems and barfing
somewhat vbg.

Same problem, been driving me nuts for two days. I do a new, clean
installation of Windows Me. Until the IE6 SP1 update is installed, no
problems accessing WU. After that, forget it. WU thinks I'm running a
Mac! Yikes.

I tried disabling the router firewall, it seemed to help only some of
the time.
I also tried a Registry edit found on Microsoft's web site, that
didn't help.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=817144

I tried updating the firmware on my router with the latest version.
Still no luck.

Thanks for everybody's help and comments.

No change in my problem. Using the Start path,
or deleting cookies, or installing the vb update
does not help.

Thanks for the alert on the restore date issue,
I've put in the patch for that.

For me, I'm going to consider this matter closed
because its secondary to another problem I'm
having with a display driver. I'll be posting that
problem shortly.

Having exactly same problems as Scott and Claude - also sending me bonkers.

Recently did a clean re-install of Windows ME and now trying to add on the
updates previously obtainable via Windows Update - can't get at any of them.
I was able to do so a week or so ago during an earlier effort at
re-installing all my software.

Have tried the Microsoft registry fix highlighted by Claude - doesn't make
any difference.

IE version is 5.5 (the one bundled on my ME back-up disk).

Is this actually a problem with the Windows Update site, or can other
readers of this group with Windows ME get into the Windows Update site with
no difficulties? Badly need this fixed...
