Default Win 98SE Freeze

I have a PIII 450 MHz running 192MB Ram and 20GB hard
drive with 8GB free. My problem is that the machine
freezes up after just a few minutes of internet activity.
I have run NAV, Spybot, Adaware and found no problems. I
have run scandisk from the command prompt and I have
defragmented the drive. Upon restart, when 98SE does the
auto scandisk, the computer will freeze, usually around
35%. The computer has also frozen in safe mode running
Adaware, and in reugular mode running Adaware, Norton, and
IE (not at the same time). I have checked the fans, they
are running. I have checked the connections and they are
good. My CPU fan went out a couple of weeks ago, but I
had it replaced. I run Zone Alarm, and still get the
freeze when ZA is turned off.

I would re-install 98SE, but I have lost some of my source
CD's for my programs. Any suggestions, or should I just
re-install?

Maybe your CPU is fried when the fan died. You can try to underclock to see
if it helps.

If you do plan on reinstalling Win98SE (I don't think you should do it
yer) make sure you get your product ID for Win98SE first.
You can find it this way.
Go into the registry (Start,Run,type regedit and press Enter)
The product key will be found in the Registry under
HKLM_Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\ .
Highlite Current Version and , in the right pane, scroll down to
Product Key.
Double click on 'Product Key' to reveal the product key numbers,
including the - 's. Copy it on paper and keep it where you can find
it later.
You will need this number if you reinstall Win98SE.
Hint: Any Win98SE cd (which is the same as the one you used to have)
will work as long as you have your Product Key.
Select Cancel and then close out (X).
If you are not comfortable going into the Registry, find someone who
will do it for you.
If you had the cpu/fan installed by a shop, perhaps you should take it
back to make sure the heatsink is properly seated and the fan is
working properly.(Perhaps the heatsink thermal pad or paste needs to
be cleaned off and redone)

Download the diagnostics for your brand hard drive, and check the drive integrity.

If you do not know the brand, download Seagate SeaTools. After it is downloaded,
double-click it, and it will create a bootable floppy disk with the diagnostic
program on it. Then boot your problem computer using the bootable floppy, and
choose the Generic Long test. It will create a report that you can read from within
the program when the tests are complete, and it is also saved as a text file on the
floppy disk.

Alternately, you can use the evaluation version of Ontrack Data Advisor, which is
what SeaTools is based upon....it should work on all brands.
