Default Problems starting up Windows 98 SE

I am having problems starting up. After the dialog box for Network Password,
I get an error message

"the program performed an illegal operation and will shut down."

When I click on the "details" button, I get this information.

"Explorer Caused an invalid page fault in module Explorer.Exec at
0167:00401f31. " It then lists registers and gives STACK DUMP information.

Here is additional information that might be of use.

1. My computer was working fine until I downloaded an update to Zone Alarm,
a firewall software.
2. When I rebooted after the update, the computer was acting as if this was
a new Windows 98 setup. It asked for my Key information from the original
Winows 98 disk. After I entered that information, it displayed the message,
"the information has been saved."
3. It continued to start and asked for networking password. As in the past,
I escaped out of that. Right after than I get the message that the program
performed an illegal operation and will shut down.

Please help!

Thank you.

If the PC starts in safe mode, I would try a work around by setting a blank
password which will bypass the network password screen.

Blank Password: Go to control panel, network, primary network logon and
select Windows Logon. Go to control panel, passwords, user profiles and
ensure the "all user's" box is marked. If you have a password established,
go to control panel, passwords, change windows password, type the password
in the old box, leave the rest blank and OK your way out. If you have
forgotten your password, delete the .pwl file with your user name (mine is
ron.pwl); however, be aware that you will lose all passwords stored in the
..pwl file. If you do not have a password established or have deleted the
..pwl file, when the W95/98 logon screen appears at boot, type a user name
only and hit OK. If the logon screen continues to appear and you have Tweak
UI installed, go to the Paranoia tab and remove the mark from "clear last
user."

Thank you Ron. I will try what you suggested.

I would have never thought of this as something related to the Network
password. I have always hit escape at this place, and the computer worked
fine in the past.

I will let you know how it goes.

Regards,

Satish

Default Problems starting up Windows 98 SE

Ron,

After trying out several different things, I did succeed in fixing the
problem.

This is what worked:

1. I put a non-bootable disk and powered on the PC.
2. When I got "non-system disk error," I took out the disk and hit F8 twice.
3. It took me to Windows startup menu where I picked "command Prompt only"
option.
4. I typed scanreg /restore at the prompt.
5. The system gave me a list of the old registeries from where I picked one
with a date prior to the start of this problem.
6. The system prompted me to reboot.
7. That took care of the problem

Thanks for your help.

Regards,

Satish

You may have future problems uninstalling ZA. Any changes the ZA update
made are gone, any new ZA files registered are not that way any more.
