Problem running Disk Cleanup, Scan Disk, Defragmentation
Running Disk Cleanup from Local Disk PropertiesGeneral tab gives msg
"Windows cannot locate the Disk Cleanup program. The program file may be corrupted or may have been deleted from computer. To reinstall Disk Cleanup, run Windows Setup again". I don't find Disk Cleanup in Windows Setup from Add/Remove program properties. Further, when I try to run Scan Disk (Error-checking) or Defragmentation fron Local Disk PropertiesTools tab, the computer freezes. Thanks for any help. |

The Disk Cleanup tool is the file CLEANMGR.EXE which should be located in
your Windows folder. If this file is missing a new copy can be extracted from the Win Me cab files as follows: CLEANMGR.EXE is contained in WIN_16.CAB of the Win Me cab set and can be restored using MSConfig | General | Extract File ... and following the prompts. The "cab" files are in the Win9x folder on the Win Me CD and also in either the C:\Windows\Options\Cabs or C:\Windows\Options\Install, which depends on the media from which Win Me was installed although some OEMs seem to have chosen to locate the Win Me cab set in other locations. See MS KB129605 - "HOW TO: Extract Original Compressed Windows Files" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=129605). -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Baba wrote: Running Disk Cleanup from Local Disk PropertiesGeneral tab gives msg "Windows cannot locate the Disk Cleanup program. Thanks Mike.
From the Search results, the CLEANMGR.EXE file is located in C:\windows folder. Moreover, Disk Cleanup works from StartProgramsAccessoriesSystem Tools but not from My ComputerLocal Disk PropertiesGeneral tab. How very odd.
This suggests to me that either there is a damaged or missing entry in the registry or that just possibly the file disktool.dll is damaged or possibly missing from the windows\system folder. I'm sorry that I don't have a simple answer for you. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Baba wrote: Thanks Mike. From the Search results, the CLEANMGR.EXE file is located in C:\windows folder. Cleanup's a subset of System Tools in Windows Setup, I think.

Yes, Search result confirms having no disktool.dll file.
I think, I should also add (I don't know if this will help to narrow down the problem or complicate it) that while running Maintenance Wizard from System Tools, on finishing of the Disk Cleanup and starting of ScanDisk, the ScanDisk locks up at the very start and there is no way except to switch off the system from the tower switch. When the system restart, the ScanDisk does start checking for errors due to improper shut down. If I run Disk Cleanup, ScanDisk and Defragmentation seperately from the System Tools, they do start though there may be some lock ups. If you would like to suggest to add disktool.dll file, please tell me how I can do it. Thanks for the help. - Baba "Mike M" wrote: How very odd. I don't have an explanation for the problems you are seeing when running
ScanDisk. As for disktool.dll I'm now mystified myself. Win Me contains no file called disktool.dll in the windows\system folder although there is an entry in the registry associated with a drive's property sheet that refers to a file of that name which is why I thought it might have been the cause of your problem. Seemingly not. My apologies. I can't quite work out what is happening here, disktool.dll may be a Symantec file and I can find references to a file of that name in the registry Win 95 and Win 98 as well as Win Me and XP, all in systems that have never seen a Norton product. My apologies for the red herring and raising your hopes. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Baba wrote: Yes, Search result confirms having no disktool.dll file. http://www.auditmypc.com/process/disktool.asp disktool.dll (Disktool Library) - Details Disktool.dll contains program code used by Disktool when performing Harddisk checking operations. Disktool.dll is required for Disktool to function correctly. If you use Disktool you should not terminate or remove disktool.dll, unless it is causing problems for your system. ---- DISKTOOL v1.2 (49KB) Platform: Dos This is a generic harddisk testing tool. It works on ALL disks that are controlled by the BIOS, ATAPI/SCSI/RAID. It accesses the drive by INT13 and INT13 extensions. You can customize how the tests are run, in what order, how many loops...
