Default Windows Protection Error - HELP!

For some reason unknown to me, when my computer started up today, I got a
blue screen with the message: Windows Protection Error. Please restart your
system.

When I restarted, the same message came up. The keyboard and mouse are
disabled, and i had to turn off the pc by unplugging the power.

I checked microsoft on another pc for this problem, and it listed a large
number of possibilites as the cause.

I did manage to do a thorough scan disk. Some errors were found and
automatically fixed. I then defragmented the drive.

When rebooting, the same message came up.

Does anyone have any hints for troubleshooting this? Thanks.

If you could not boot to windows ...how did you defrag the drive???

Does that mean you were able to boot to safe mode?

Hmm..

I did manage to do a thorough scan disk.

In Real Mode DOS or Windows Safe Mode?

Some errors were found and
automatically fixed.

I then defragmented the drive.

Ah! - so you did manage to run your PC, at least in Safe Mode?

Do you still see the 'Windows Protection Error' message when you boot into
Safe Mode or does it only show when booting into Normal Mode?

If only in Normal Mode, then you probably have a hardware/driver issue.
Have you altered anything - installed hardware/software very recently? You
could try a System Restore and select the last known 'Good' date/time
immediately BEFORE the error message manifested itself.

More info/feedback would be helpful.

Default Windows Protection Error - HELP!

I was able to boot into Safe Mode. The Windows Protection Error only appears
when booting into Normal Mode. No new hardware or software was installed
prior to this happening.

System restore should hopefull work in safe mode

roll it back to a date prior to the problem

For some reason, System Restore doesn't work. (It is turned on, but there is
only one restore point which corresponds roughly to the date when this
problem first appeared.)

OK - running out of options now, - boot into Real Mode DOS using your WinMe
startup floppy disk and select option 4. Minimal Boot.

At the A:\ prompt, type :-

scanreg /restore

and press Enter/Return.

Follow the screen instructions and select the last GOOD registry BEFORE the
problem occurred.

Don't forget to remove the floppy disk BEFORE you tell the PC to reboot -
otherwise you'll boot back into DOS.

I inserted the WinMe boot disk and restarted, but I get the same error
message. Is there any way to get to the A:\ prompt without the boot disk?
(From Safe Mode maybe?)

Looks like your BIOS is set to seek C:\ before A:\. You could try resetting
the boot sequence to seek the A:\ drive first.

However, you could try booting into Safe Mode and then :-

Start | Run and type :-

scanreg /restore

in the box and press Enter/Return

Then continue with previous instructions.
