Scandisk
Hello Guys,
On start-up I get a report that I need to run scandisk from within Windows but when I do so it stops when it has run out of memory. I have located the problem area of the disk to several downloads which were probably interrupted (improper shutdown), which I cannot delete due to, I suspect, problems with the File Allocation Tables. Is there any application which will allow me to remove these files or remove the bad sector from the file system? Basically I am looking for an alternative to formatting the disk. Thanks! |

Please provide more info about the out of memory situation. Is there a
message and if so, what is it verbatim? -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Steve Wade" wrote in message ... Most likely your problem is explained in the MS KB article:
"Your Computer Does Not Have Enough Free Memory to Defrag the Drive" http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q229154 quote SYMPTOMS When you try to run Disk Defragmenter (Defrag.exe) or ScanDisk (Scandskw.exe), you may receive one of the following error messages: ...... /quote -- Mikhail Zhilin MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) http://www.aha.ru/~mwz Sorry, no technical support by e-mail. " quote SYMPTOMS When you try to run Disk Defragmenter (Defrag.exe) or ScanDisk (Scandskw.exe), you may receive one of the following error messages: ..... /quote -- Thanks! Just for reference, this was my solution. I ran Norton's Disc Doctor and it did enough for me to be able to run Scandisk without any error messages. Took ages but it worked. Obviously I don't have much faith in the longevity of the HD and now need to replace it. This Maxtor is only twelve months old and so it sounds like I need a replacement which is of a more robust construction. Next question: Is there a freeware app which will do what Norton Ghost does? All the best. Steve |

Steve,
Yes, it seems you have the problem other than described in the mentioned article -- and more serious. To clone HDDs, you can use a shareware -- 30 days of free use with no limitations -- Bootit Next Generation (BootitNG, or BING), www.bootitng.com instead of Norton Ghost. It creates a bootable diskette -- boot from it, cancel continuation, and select Partition Work. -- Mikhail Zhilin MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) http://www.aha.ru/~mwz Sorry, no technical support by e-mail.
