Default upgrade advice

A neighbour bought a new system recently with XP installed and tells me that
he can't install 98 (on a partition) because his new mobo doesn't have the
correct drivers. Is this often the case? I want to upgrade my hardware and
continue to use WIN98se.
TIA
Gilbert
