Default Reinstall OE

KB823353 was offered for a while and then pulled from WU. Regardless of the
documentation, it works perfectly well on Win9x and gets rid of the ~.wab
file among other things. However, it causes problems if it was installed
*before* KB837009. The symptoms are that KB837009 is repeatedly offered at
WU. The solution is to uninstall 823353, install 837009, then reinstall
823353. I know of no other problems with KB 823353 on Win9x.

I *think* it was in the newsgroups that I went through this all some time in
the last few months if you want to search Google Groups.

operating system and posting in the wrong group altogether?

1. What is DSNSTUFF besides a scam site quickly set up to take advantage

of
people like you who worry too much? How do I test my IE/OE without

shelling
out money?

2. I had no idea what menus you're referring to in IE (or OE, for that
matter) until I looked real hard and found them in IE under ToolsMail
and
News... Please, when posting, attempt to be precise and detailed in what

it
is you're referring to. My fault for not reading more carefully, but I

would

3. I'm surprised that IE Repair didn't fix it and I hope you *only* did
IE
Repair, not a true reinstall of IE6. The former is pretty much harmless,

but
the latter can cause real problems (just like reinstalling Windows over

the
top of an existing installation, you end up reverting files to older
version, replacing newer versions that came primarily from Updates.
Broken
Updates and DLL Hell result.)

4. Have you ever had any other browsers or email programs installed?

Because
now that I've taken another look, my first thought is that some other
program took over as your default email program, stole those menu items

for
itself and failed to restore the situation to it's previous state. Or
some
other type of similar trick that disabled that menu. Not saying that's

what
did it, but it's the first thought. I'm almost certain this isn't a

Registry
issue which means it's a DLL or EXE.

5. Look in Internet Options, Programs tab and see if Outlook Express is
listed as your default Mail and News reader.

6. Perhaps someone who spends all their time on IE and OE will recognize

the
issue and have a solution, probably re-registering one or more DLLs. You

DO
NOT want to uninstall and/or reinstall either of the programs (they are

part
of the same package.)

Strange, I have q837009 listed as an update in IE. And q823353 in OE. If I
uninstall the OE update and reinstall you think this will help. Is q823353
still offered at WU? I guess I can check the catalog. Thanks I'll get back

Default Reinstall OE

No. I don't think you have any problems with those Updates in particular.
Your system doesn't exhibit the symptoms. If it will make you feel better,
you might want to reinstall KB823353, http://tinyurl.com/3zd6d, just to be
sure the latest versions of the files involved are installed.

Please! Do what I suggested and re-post this question, using proper
cross-posting, to the two IE and OE newsgroups I recommended, who are much
more likely to have the experience required to recognize this issue (if
anyone does.) You have relayed stories of installing other apps and then
trying to tie them together in unnatural ways. It is no wonder you have
problems, but the other folks are much more likely to recognize just what
you're talking about and maybe even have a solution. I seriously doubt
you're going to get the answer here.

I
have
a couple of issues about OE. I have a security update Q823353. Will
this
be
affected by a un-reinstall? Why do this; because when on dnsstuff

the website says the application OE is not installed properly or
corrupted.
Links in IEv.6 drop down menu do not connect to OEv.6 operations
like
start

Default Reinstall OE

I did not find q823353 in the WU catalog and although I have read Glen's
link and see a DL for it this was dated July 13, 2004 TechNet and this other
webpage I found in Knowledge Base was dated August 14, 2005 says it is for
win2k and xp for:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms04-018.mspx

A dialog box with no text appears if you reply to a news message in Outlook
Express 6 Service Pack 1
and the article says nothing about q837009

FAQ says: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555398/en-us

Are Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, or Windows Millennium Edition
critically affected by any of the vulnerabilities that are addressed in this
security bulletin?
No. None of these vulnerabilities are critical in severity on Windows 98, on
Windows 98 Second Edition, or on Windows Millennium Edition.

Confused...Also I updated kb837009 in April of 2004 and kb823353 in July of
2004. I do not find kb823353 in WU list for win98 or 2nd ed. Do you all
think I should get rid of it?

KB823353 was offered for a while and then pulled from WU. Regardless of

the
documentation, it works perfectly well on Win9x and gets rid of the ~.wab
file among other things. However, it causes problems if it was installed
*before* KB837009. The symptoms are that KB837009 is repeatedly offered at
WU. The solution is to uninstall 823353, install 837009, then reinstall
823353. I know of no other problems with KB 823353 on Win9x.

I *think* it was in the newsgroups that I went through this all some time

in
the last few months if you want to search Google Groups.

Default Reinstall OE

Believe me, I have read and experimented with everything involved with all
of the articles you cite and tons more. Please reread my previous post. You
have no problems with those Updates. They were installed in the proper
order. Your problem is almost certainly an entirely different one and
totally unrelated. It's also totally OT for this NG, and you're very
unlikely to get any more answers than you're already getting. Which advice
is:
