problem networking my laptop
The kids computer went kaput a couple of weeks ago. As I cant afford to
replace it just yet I thought I would let them use my old lappy cos all they use the puter for is internet and chatting. I have newly installed win98se on the laptop so there is nothing on there except windows. The problem I have is that when I try to install the usb wireless adapter windows recognises it as an "unknown device", and will not install it. I have tried everything I can think of including auto install, manual install, add new hardware wizard, choosing the item from a list and choosing the driver manually......................but it still wont install. (Funnily enough I also downloaded win98 drivers for my pendrive and windows wont recognise that either). Could it be a problem with the USB port (although the usb wireless adapter used to work on my lappy when ME was the OS). Any ideas anyone please, cos the kids are starting to drive me crazy cos they cant MSN their mates |

done that and the drivers I have are the latest, years later than win98. Boot the computer into Safe Mode. Open Control Panel - System - Device Manager. Delete all repeat all items in the Network adapters category. Also delete all items that show any sort of an error flag. Shut down and restart the computer normally. It will redetect the devices and (hopefully) configure them correctly. One further question. Do the USB ports on this computer work properly for any other devices? Have you tried using a digital camera, or a printer or scanner that connects via USB? If not then you may have to repeat the Safe Mode trick and also delete everything in the USB category.
